A Battle of the Books by Gail Hamilton (1833 - 1896).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/a-battle-of-the-books-by-gail-hamilton/

"When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for an author to dissolve the bands which have connected him with his publishers, a decent respect for the opinions of mankind requires that he should declare the causes which impel him to the separation." So begins the alleged author's introduction to this work, which chronicles the conflict between a female author and her publisher. This conflict really did happen, although the details (dates, names, etc.) in this book are fictitious. For more information about the actual situation, see the author's Wikipedia article.
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/54380
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Chapter Division

Renewal of Hostilities
part 1, please read until
And nothing can be more friendly and helpful than your whole course towards me has been. I shall never cease to hold it in grateful remembrance until you offend me, and then it will crisp up like flax in the flames, and I shall bear down on you just as heavily as if you had never done me a good turn in your life. Such, alas! is human nature.”

part 2, please start at
M. N. TO B. & H., SEPTEMBER 11.
“I have received your letter of the 8th inst., declining arbitration.

Battle of Gog and Magog
part 1, please read until
“Your ‘My Garden,’ is a hit number one. Crowds of inquiries for the author's name beseech me, but I cry ‘mum’ to the myriads.”

part 2, please start at
M. N. TO MR. HUNT, MAY 1, 1762.
“Can't you read figures, dear? Don't you know a five when you see it? Aren't you able to tell a two from a four unless they are labelled?
and read until
As soon as it resolves itself into a well-defined hole, I am coming to Athens to get a new pair. I have nothing in the world to say to you, and I shall not come to see you. Still, if you should say, ‘Hadn't 196 you better?’ perhaps I might be induced to rasp my knuckles against No. 7—.”

part 3, please start at
MR. HUNT TO M. N., SEPTEMBER 23.
“I am glad you like the costume into which we put your first-born. It is a handsome baby and will go alone uncommonly early.”
and read until
“From the inquiries which Mr. Dane has made among other publishers, I believe that the sum which Messrs. Brummell & Hunt allege that they have made on all my books represents much more nearly the profits which they made on a single one of them, ‘City Lights,’ and that the profits which accrued to themselves from the rise in the prices of books are much larger than they represent them.

part 4, please start at
“It was for the purpose of elucidating this matter, also, that the questions were sent to Messrs. Hunt, 224 Parry, & Co. some days before the reference began. Had I known the profits of their firm, the number and sales of their books, and the profits of their periodicals, I should have been in a position to judge of the correctness of their statements regarding the cost and profits of my books.

Sober Second and Third Thoughts
part 1, please read until
And when we reflect that not only do they bestow upon us these large sums of money, but, as sundry extracts in other parts of this volume show, they first manufacture for us the fame which brings the money, we are, in the language of the hymn, lost in wonder, love, and praise. It must be heart-rending to fashion your graven image and then have that image turn upon you and demand a share of the profits!

part 2, start at
Unhappily a dense ignorance upon this subject broods over the community, and there should be added to our literature an
AUTHOR'S CATECHISM.

Hello, My Dear.
Again, thank you for what's sure to be a great project here.
Yes, let us tell the history of *Publishers Behaving Badly!* *GRIN*

I would like four sections, please.

3 Rise and Progress of Suspicion in the Soul
4 Declaration of War

and then, because your wonderful selection for the Chapter Notes amuse me, thereby tempting me *GRIN*

Sections:
7 Renewal of Hostilities, part 1
8 Renewal of Hostilities, part 2.

I must say, Caroline, that because of your notes, "Sober Second and Third Thoughts" also makes me laugh.

I'll get these four sections completed before requesting them (if still available), but ... lady, you know how to choose books and highlight them well.

For which I thank you.

Section 7: RENEWAL of Hostilities, Part 1

https://librivox.org/uploads/carolin/battleofthebooks_07_hamilton_128kb.mp3 36.49

I have to say ... there are some VERY odd phrasings throughout this book. *Laugh*
I had to go through and research and still look *PUZZLED!* because I've no real clue, even now, as to what
"Fritzez being good at 'figgures'" means!
If anyone does know, kindly illuminate me. HaHaHa!

Also, Dear DPL, (when we find your kind self!) WELCOME to this Project! *LAUGH*
I TRULY appreciate your listening to these long sections. I know it's A LOT!

Please note that I did NOT stumble, stutter and then lisp on the line "the—the—the—kurrssee."

I used the closest Latin pronunciation I could come to on "If they assent, the Troja may be comprehended in a nuce."
I was terribly tempted to simply say "nutshell" ... but of course, I did the responsible thing, and read as written. (I hope.)

Sincere Thanks to all involved!

One more section to go!

Here is Section 8: Renewal of Hostilities, Part II

I enjoyed adding a touch of rat to the exploitative publishers.
They shall not prevail.
