The Tempest (version 2) by William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616).

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project https://librivox.org/the-tempest-version-2-by-william-shakespeare/
Few plays have been seen as a more fitting conclusion to a playwright's career than Shakespeare's <i>The Tempest</i>. Focusing on the aging sorcerer and rightful Duke of Milan, Prospero, we are transported to a remote island where magic and strange music fill the air, and the monstrous slave Caliban roams in bitterness. Seeing an opportunity to restore his slandered name, Prospero conjures a mighty storm to bring down a ship containing his wicked brother and the King of Naples, both of whom had driven him out of Milan twelve years before. By stranding them on a remote end of the island, and with the help of the airy spirit Ariel, Prospero sets out to right the wrongs that had been done to him, before renouncing his magic forever. Featuring some of the most powerful speeches in Shakespeare's canon, and with an incredible grasp on tone and the Neoclassical unities of time, place and action, <i>The Tempest</i> remains a formidable and moving farewell to both the Bard and the timeless works he left behind.<br><br>And to perform it all? Three men (<a href="https://librivox.org/reader/11305">Craig Franklin</a>, <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/10789">Tomas Peter</a>, and <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/9905">Brad "Hamlet" Filippone</a>) and one woman (<a href="https://librivox.org/reader/10179">Sonia</a>), determined to give you a performance of Shakespeare's final work that you will never forget. You thought you knew your Shakespeare? Well, think again! ( Tomas Peter)

The MW has been filled. I forgot to set the Dramatis Personae as section 00; could you do that for me, Sonia?

The fun can now begin!

I'm excited to kick off another round of Shakespeare, so I decided to hand in my bit parts extra early.

My, the masque of the spirits is going to be a camp event LOL. I applied a bit of reverb to the file to give it an otherworldly air. We can do the same for Iris and Juno (Juno's reverb should be slightly different than Ariel's, if Ariel will get reverb). Sonia, you can roughly follow the tune I give to the song, or you can make your verse different if you want. I made it up on the spot, so it's not based on a pre-existing tune.

I added Section 0, good thinking. Should have thought about that myself.

wow this is absolutely a strong start you made here, Tomas. A pity they are all only minor characters, the voices you gave them are so cool. I love the Italian-mobster voice for Francisco  The mariners are really a frightened bunch  I'm gonna have fun with those too.

And Ceres has really a great effect, and your voice does sound very female here. Love the song too, I will try to copy the tune so it fits a bit.

I was thinking about some sort of reverb for Ariel but I fear it will be too big a role to keep that up throughout. Maybe a very slight one, but it needs to be clearly understandable. Definitely would want a reverb in the songs though.

All your parts PL ok. You left out the burthen in the DP, but I guess you mean to say that would be Ceres as well maybe ? :hmm: It's not clear who does that.

great start !

I am wondering if the Epilogue shouldn't be a brief scene all to itself.

No, this is not an attempt to get a scene all to myself lol

LOL nice try ;) well usually the epilogue remains as part of the final act though, mainly so we don't have a small section compared to the rest. I let Tomas decide, but I think I would opt for keeping it in Act 5. You'll have the final word of the play, if that's any consolation ;)

Yeah, no, we're not doing that LOL. Prologues always go in Act 1 and Epilogues go in Act 5. I don't think extra sections are needed for things a listener wouldn't want to skip anyway. We only do it for the Dramatis Personae because some listeners may want the option to launch right into the play, and then hear the credits at the very end.

I'm going to get started with the small bits either tonight or tomorrow.

Off-topic, if you're interested, my solo reading of Dickens' "Barnaby Rudge" which I began back in March was FINALLY completed a couple of days ago (I had some delays along the way when I didn't have much time for recording). https://librivox.org/barnaby-rudge-version-3-by-charles-dickens/
Starting on "Oliver Twist" shortly.

Wow cool, Brad, congrats. Over 25 hours  great job ! And Oliver Twist will not be any shorter I guess. Is your goal to do them all ?

I had a tiny bit of time and got the cast list and mariner in at least. For the mariners I let out a whole Existenzangst  (does that word have meaning in English ?)

Yes, I do plan to do all of Dickens' works--except that I still haven't decided about his non-fiction ("American Notes," "Pictures From Italy," etc.). This was my sixth of his novels, plus I did the five "Christmas Books" two years ago.

Actually, "Barnaby Rudge" is not my longest. My recording of "Dombey and Son" came in at 34:20:18!

Now--I'm going to try to stay on topic from now on! lol As I said, I'll get my bit parts done today. And then I'll come up with some melodies for Stephano's drunken songs!

Great work, Sonia! The mariner is easily PL OK. Existenzangst sounds like existential angst, but maybe it describes a fear for one's life (if so, then I don't believe there is one word in English to describe that feeling). I will update the MW.
