The World’s Story Volume V: Italy, France, Spain and Portugal by Eva March Tappan (1854 - 1930).

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project https://librivox.org/the-worlds-story-volume-v-italy-france-spain-and-portugal-by-eva-march-tappan/
This is the fifth volume of the 15-volume series of <i>The World’s Story: a history of the World in story, song and art</i>, edited by Eva March Tappan. Each book is a compilation of selections from prose literature, poetry and pictures and offers a comprehensive presentation of the world's history, art and culture, from the early times till the beginning of the 20th century. Topics in Part V include Italian painters and poets, the French Revolution, the Spanish Inquisition and Portuguese explorers. ( Sonia)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/worldsstoryhisto05tapp/page/n11
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

And the 5th book in this series has launched. Included is everything you ever wanted to know about the French Revolution, the Spanish Inquisition, Dante, Michelangelo and Don Quixote, Charlemagne, Columbus and Napoleon, and many many more.... a very interesting chapter even tells the story of how a Portuguese king had his dead wife exhumed to get her coronated

Interested enough ? Please claim

As in the previous parts, for those of you who are new to the project, some special notes for this project:

1) Again I would like to have the footnotes included. Just put them after the sentence of the footnote marker, wherever you think it fits well. Say: “Footnote - [read footnote] - End of Footnote”.

2) And like before, the explanations to the illustrations will be included. They have their special sections. Please include every detail from the title, including, painter, time, or whatever is written in the book (also include the line "photograph/painting, page xx"). This time I included the whole title into the MW, so it may make matters easier. ;)

3) I have noted down in the MW where to read the long LV disclaimer. All sections under 3 pages long can use the short disclaimer. Check the first post on how to read the intros.

*****

And for our thespians, we have 3 mini dramas this time. All roles are of course GENDER NEUTRAL !

I want the voice credits to run this specific way, so please, if you choose one role, give your voice credit line according to these 3 sentences (with the intonation that would make it fit well in the part of the sentence where your credit will be located):

For Section 14: A supposed street scene in Verona in the fourteenth century, by William Shakespeare:

"recording by Sonia as the Narrator, Nemo as Gregory, Tomas Peter as Sampson, Monika as Abraham, Eva Davis as Benvolio, Son of the Exiles as Tybalt, Sarah Hale as First Citizen, Jim Locke as Capulet, Foon as Lady Capulet, Larry Wilson as Montague, Devorah Allen as Lady Montague and Alan Mapstone as the Prince of Verona"

For Section 48: The coming of the Maid of Orléans (1428) by Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller:

"recording by Sonia as the Narrator, Monika as Earl Dunois, Eva Davis as Johanna, Tomas Peter as King Charles, Nemo as Archbishop and Alan Mapstone as Hire"

For Section 60: Cardinal Richelieu and his enemy (about 1640), by Sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton:

"recording by Sonia as the Narrator, Foon as Richelieu, Monika as Julie, Eva Davis as Huguet, Tomas Peter as De Mauprat and Nemo as Joseph"

Thanks

Sonia

Ok, claiming is opened now.

Tomas again asked me to assign him some sections and a role in each play, so here's what you will get this time

for the stage plays:

14. A supposed street scene in Verona in the fourteenth century - Sampson, one of the servants of the Capulet household
48. The coming of the Maid of Orléans - King Charles, since he was supposed to be a young king at that time, your voice is very fitting
60. Cardinal Richelieu and his enemy - De Mauprat, quite torn figure, I think, you'll like that role

then I chose a section from each of the countries available:

for Italy: 25. Giotto and his ''O'' - short and funny story

for France: 63. Louis XIV and Molière - painting description

for Spain: 100. The Cid and the leper - ballad

for Portugal: 133. The departure of King Sebastian - poem

Hope you like them all :)

Ok, let's see...

a role in each play if there're enough female ones, please assign me what you would like me to read there.

Then I guess I need to do Dante, so it's 10 and 11 for me :) (in case Pier comes along I'll step back gracefully ;) )

Okok, I won't look any further now <sittingonmyfingerstopreventthemfromtypingtogetstuffforwork>

Sonia, can you be casting agent once again and put in me and Nemo for any or all roles that suit? I know these will all fill soon, so you'll be good regardless ... :)

Could I sign up for a couple of historical notes?

I see that 10 has already been spoken for, but I would like to tackle 17 and 23, if I may?
Possibly more to come later, we'll see.

ok guys, it's kinda difficult as there are not many female roles. :? I tried to be fair, so I hope you all are ok with your assignements.

how about you all get the servants' roles in Shakespeare, then you can all fight together in a great scene with Tomas. They're male roles, but I think they are juicier than the 2 female parts.
Monika: Abraham
Eva: Benvolio
Nemo: Gregory

for Johanna of Orleans:
Eva: Johanna (a bigger role this time)
Nemo: Archbishop
Monika: Dunois

and for Richelieu finally:
Monika: Julie (to be fair you get the female role here then, since I gave the other female role to Eva)
Eva: Huguet
Nemo: Joseph

happy ?

Oh yes, and almost forgot: on how to read your voice credit, see here: viewtopic.php?p=1521638#p1521638 (but I think you know that already ;) )
