Discourses on the First Decade of Titus Livius, Book 1 by Niccolò Machiavelli (1469 - 1527). Translated by Ninian Hill Thomson (1830-1921)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/discourses-on-the-first-decade-of-titus-livius-book-1-by-niccolo-machiavelli/

In "Discourses on the First Decade of Titus Livius", posthumous work by the author of The Prince, Machiavelli discusses the useful lessons that could be learnt from the past for the present. As the title mentions, the subject of the work is the first ten books of Livy's Ab urbe condita, which cover the expansion of Rome from the legendary monarchy of Romulus to the end of the Third Samnite War (293 BCE). The whole work contains three books, with 142 numbered chapters - perhaps not a coincidence, since Livy's history also contained 142 books. In the first book, the author discusses things that happened inside of Rome as the result of public counsel. (Summary by Leni)
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/10827
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hello Leni,
I was happy to see this book, as I am preparing to narrate my first solo work (The Lays of Ancient Rome, by Macauley) in a couple months. Since this also addresses early Rome, it will provide some additional background for that narration, and allow me to break in a new desktop am migrating to for recording. That said, I will be very appreciative of suggestions for improvement that you or other members have to offer.

Could I please begin by reserving Chapters 1-5 inclusive? Thank you.

Hi Lenny,

My name is Donavan Olsen. I'm brand new to LV and I'm excited to do some reading. This book is right in my wheelhouse, as I love this period of Roman history. I was thinking of starting with a relatively short section, as it is my first reading.

Can I have section 20?

I'd love to do more as this project continues, as well

Here's a link to my "1 minute test" so you can hear how I sound:

I'm looking forward to contributing

Moving from PC to IMAC, so sent in another test. Used Audacity with Samson C01U usb condenser mic. No processing. Will always process for noise etc. in actual recording. SUGGESTIONS WELCOME.

Hello, Dave

Thanks for claiming (and sorry it took me a while to acknowledge it, hard week at work  ). Sections assigned.

Hi, Donavan

Welcome to Librivox and to this project! It is great that you already posted your one-minute test. I saw that Sonia has answered about it in the Listeners and Editors Wanted as well. So you are good to go. Could you let me know what name you would like to be added to your page? We can also link to a personal website or blog.
