Child of Storm by H. Rider Haggard (1856 - 1925).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/child-of-storm-by-h-rider-haggard/
Child of Storm is a 1913 novel by H. Rider Haggard featuring Allan Quatermain. The plot is set in 1854-56 and concerns Quatermain hunting in Zululand and getting involved with Mameema, a beautiful African girl who causes great turmoil in the Zulu kingdom.
The novel is the second in a trilogy by Haggard involving the collapse of the Zulu kingdom and featuring the dwarf Zikali. The first book is Marie, and the third, Finished.
The story takes place against the real life struggle between Cetshwayo and Umbelazi, the two sons of the Zulu king Mpande (called "Panda" in the novel). The events culminate in the Battle of Ndondakusuka (here called the "Battle of the Tugela") in 1856. Real life people such as Panda, Cetshwayo, and John Robert Dunn appear as characters. ( wikipedia)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Hi and welcome to Librivox!
There are a few things to do before you get started.
You will need to complete a one minute test - this is to check your specs are up to Librivox standards, and if not, you'll be given hints on how to remedy that. http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/1-Minute_Test
Please post your test in the Listeners Wanted forum (see the dropdown at the bottom of the page) for the speediest response. Waiting for the OK may seem tedious, but can save time in the long run.
You will also need to be added to the catalog of readers. I will add you using your forum name, but if you prefer your real name or a pseudonym let me know. We can also link to a personal blog or website. If you click on your name in the Magic Window, you will see your own personal catalog page.
Be sure to read the first post - all the info you need is there, but if anything doesn't make sense, just ask. The wiki (see the top of the page) has bundles of info too.

Hi,
How has this project been going?
I would be interested in Chapter 4, Mameena.
I've submitted my Test Recording (unedited), but haven't seen any feedback.

From that, I've learned I need to do a better job of avoiding outside noise, echo, and providing a more pronounced voice.
If the rest of the settings, etc. seem fine, could I have a shot at this as my first chapter?

Certainly!
I'll sign you up, and once you get the OK, you'll be able to hit the ground running. This project is going surprisingly slowly, bearing in mind the popularity of Haggard, so if you enjoy it, you can always come back for more!

Just a quick tip: 6000+ words is quite a long section... you might want to find something shorter for your first recording (say 1000-1500 words). I'll hold this section for 2 months for you, so you'll have plenty of time to get the hang of things before tackling the longer section.

Thanks! Will it be weird for listeners to hear different readers?

Some might think so, but we do collaborative works all the time. If listeners don't like them, they don't have to listen 8-) It's a great way for readers to learn the skills needed, and also try their hands at a variety of different genres. You can always tackle a solo when you get some experience under your belt (and I think most of us gravitate towards them eventually), but they are a lot of work and not everyone wants to make that commitment.
I have also read that some listeners actually enjoy hearing various voices and accents in collaborative or group projects.

In rehearsing, I came up with some questions:

There are some strange, African terms and names in there. Is it sufficient to give it my best pronunciation, or should we agree upon how they are said?

There are footnotes. It seems I should read those at the point of the footnote in the narrator's voice. Does this sound correct?
Should I vocalize that it is a footnote at the start of it?
Also, should I say the word,"Editor," with the footnote?

Hopefully these questions are not too bothersome. Though I've never heard of Haggard before this, I am really enjoying the story.

Thanks for the help,
Keith

Thank you for asking.
I would suggest “winging it”, which is what I did in my section. It is almost unheard of that you would be called on any weird pronunciation. Our general rule is we don’t comment on pronunciation, except where mispronunciation changes the meaning of a word.
If that approach bothers you (and it does some people who are less slap-dash than me), we do have a pronunciation help thread in the “Need Help” forum. Sometimes that can help if we have readers who speak the language in question.
There is also a website called howjasay.com... I’m not sure if it will have a Swahili page but could be worth a look.

As for footnotes... this is a personal pet peeve of mine, but I hate footnotes, especially in fiction, and you are at liberty to omit them. However, if you think they add something important or interesting, we do have a standard (but not written in stone) way of dealing with them... At the end of the sentence, say “footnote... end footnote” . Just read it in your normal voice.

Haggard was a writer of popular (think cheap paperbacks at the airport!) novels that were devoured by troops in WWI, especially those convalescing, and were passed around until they literally fell apart. They were required (?) in care packages, along with socks and baked goods. They were also popular with young adults.
