Hints to Pilgrims by Charles S. Brooks (1878 - 1934).
This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project https://librivox.org/hints-to-pilgrims-by-charles-s-brooks/
In this collection of 17 short essays, Charles S. Brooks (1878-1934), with the usual panache and wit, which he also displays in his comedies, describes funny incidents that can happen to people on holidays or in everyday life.
His two "frightful" comedies, "Wappin' Wharf" and "At the Sign of the Greedy Pig", are already in our catalogue as full-cast stage plays. (summary by Sonia)
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/37105
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

hi Bob :)

I see you are back from your holidays and ready to start. So are you sure you want to start out with a solo immediately ? Not getting your feet wet a bit and learning our ways in a group project or two ?

Well, it's your choice of course. I can MC this project. I have participated in Brooks' two "frightful comedies" and they were fabulous :9:

I will set up a Magic Window shortly, stay tuned.

I will be on vacation from Wednesday 27 March till Sunday 14 April
and unable to PL during that time. Thank you for your patience.

Thank you, Sonia,

>So are you sure you want to start out with a solo immediately?
Though new to Librivox, I've a reasonable amount of experience with other solo audio/video efforts and have a pretty clear understanding of what I'm undertaking.

>I will set up a Magic Window shortly, stay tuned.
Will do. I have the first chapter recorded, edited and waiting to upload. :D
Looking forward to feedback/direction if needed.

all right, here we go. The MW is set up. As soloist you are also the Book coordinator, so you need to fill in all the boxes with the chapter titles, put in the links you have recorded and uploaded, and possibly also the length of the files in the notes section, so the DPL will know how long a section is.

To enter the MW, click on BC/Admin right underneath the MW. It may be that you cannot log in immediately, then simply click on Forgot Password, and you'll get your new password for the MW.

If you need any further help, just holler. :)

Noob question: Do I use the librivox userID that is auto-filled, or my nursebob ID?

no, you need to input your nursebob ID. You can also try with your password, but often people have to get a new one for the MW.

The MW is personal, so the "universal" LV ID would be taboo, or anyone could just enter your MW and change it ;)

As a former software engineer, I completely understand. Sometimes these "labor saving" conveniences of our browsers get in the way of the tasks...

One last (I hope) Noob question:
Chapters in Hints to Pilgrims are numbered and named. Looking at the instructions:
"Chapter [number] of Hints to Pilgrims. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
Say:
"Hints to Pilgrims, by Charles S. Brooks. [Chapter]"

Would it be correct as follows?
"Chapter One of Hints to Pilgrims. This is a LibriVox recording..."
Followed by:
"Hints to Pilgrims, by Charles S. Brooks. Chapter One, Hints to Pilgrims"

yes I agree, in this specific first chapter it might sound a bit silly. But yes, that's the way the intro should be done. From the second section onwards you can use a shorter intro, have you seen this in the instructions ?

Sigh... One more "one last question." :?:
Is this thread where I post upload URLs? That is, is This the project thread mentioned in the upload instructions? :?:
I feel like I'm the new hire in the ICU... "Where is the med room?" :?

 questions are good. (see, that's why "getting your feet wet in group projects" would have been helpful ;) - we're not saying this for nothing)

But yes, this is your project thread, everything you do for this project will be posted in this project thread.

Usually you post something like: "Chapter 1 is ready for PL, recording time: 10:43 min." or something to that effect.
Then you enter the MW and put your link in the listen url section (oh I see you already did that  )
finally you toggle the last column to Ready for PL, so the DPL sees this immediately.

That's it. :)
