The Doom of London by Fred M. White (1859 - 1935).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-doom-of-london-by-fred-m-white/

Here are six stories, each one describing a disaster afflicting London, that were popularly serialized during 1903-1904 in Pearson’s Magazine. The tales depict (1) a deep freeze and unprecedented snowfall; (2) a heavy, blinding, paralyzing blanket of fog; (3) a widespread killer virus; (4) a fraudulent scheme causing financial panic; (5) a minor electrical accident in a tunnel that spirals into catastrophe; and (6) most of the city’s water supply, reportedly contaminated with deadly bubonic bacillus, puts the population in great fear of plague. Is the word “doom” in the book's title accurate, or is it just hyperbole? (Lee Smalley)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/57904
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I wonder about that one as well! I think some of the best movies are disaster movies, but that probably makes me weird!

OK, Ann, here's Story 5. One more catastrophe to go before we reemerge into the sunshine. It looks like it's going to be quite a bit longer than the first five, but I expect/hope to get it done sometime next week.

Have started searching for the next (happier?) one, but haven't found it yet.

Story 4 is PL OK! The World Series is taking up all my PL'ing time. The game last night, the 18 inning one, I made it through the 15th. That game was a doozie!

I just realized that our last story is The River of Death! Now that is such a sunny sounding story!
