I doubt that the poet is the geologist. For one thing, the geologist was only 23 in January, 1840, so it's not likely that he had at that time been writing poetry "for many years" (although "many years" may mean something different to a 23-year-old than it does to me). Also, he was working in Ireland at the time, which conflicts with the fact that the preface was written in "Allesley, near Coventry". Neither of these proves that they are different Thomas Oldhams, but they are suggestive.

On the other hand, the British Museum lists the author of this book of poems as "OLDHAM (Thomas) of Allesley",* and there is a survey reference in the archives of Coventry (http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/972963d4-2179-4912-8c86-c8927f827abb) that refers to one "Thomas Oldham, of Packington, Warwickshire, miller", who in 1817 owned property bordering Allesley. This (or perhaps one of his relatives) seems a more likely candidate for the poet. But of course there's no way to know for sure.

Il n'y a pas de quoi. I'm stuck at home with a cold and I'm glad of something to occupy my time and alleviate the boredom.

Thank you, people!!!

I've entered PL OK for Phil's, Sonia's and Sazja's contribution. I couldn't get to Craig's this session, I'll get to it next time :)

A warm welcome to Sazja!! My one comment would be about the filename; we don't use capitals. Don't worry about this one, I can change it in the system, just keep that in mind for your next uploads, which I hope there will be plenty of, because you have a lovely voice and reading style!! :9:

Hmm, Craig, I just noticed I don't have a link to the text you used. Could you post it, please? Thanks! :D

meanwhile here's another sleuthing job for Grant, maybe he can find the life-dates for this author as well (and hopefully PD for me)

For some reason the title is in German, but the poem is in English:

"Auf dem Heimweg" by Mary Keely Boutelle (????-????)

Recording time: 1:13 min.

that's strange, I often upload lots in one go. I always open the uploader in another tab, then it won't close when you copy paste them over ;)

Must do that next time - it is so obvious! Oh well, brain cells are off today.
