Thanks for the reading Kerwin
Suicide may also be regarded as an experiment—a question which man puts to Nature, trying to force her to an answer. The question is this: What change will death produce in a man's existence and in his insight into the nature of things? It is a clumsy experiment to make; for it involves the destruction of the very consciousness which puts the question and awaits the answer.

they stand like a sentinel at the gate leading out of this world. Perhaps there is no man alive who would not have already put an end to his life, if this end had been of a purely negative character, a sudden stoppage of existence. There is something positive about it; it is the destruction of the body; and a man shrinks from that, because his body is the manifestation of the will to live.
However, the struggle with that sentinel is, as a rule, not so hard as it may seem from a long way off, mainly in consequence of the antagonism between the ills of the body and the ills of the mind. If we are in

Hi Sam Welcome to LibriVox! :) We're pleased that you chose the Short Nonfiction Collection for your first recording. 44 minutes is quite an undertaking for a first recording! I listened to a just a few minutes of your recording, and I think that with a few tweaks, it will be fine. However, right now, you need help in controlling your volume. Usually, we ask that people new to recording for LibriVox do a one-minute sound check, to be sure their specifications are what LibriVox needs. http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/1-Minute_Test. Then, by posting their sound check here viewforum.php?f=21 A volunteer with recording expertise will listen and help you along with issues like volume settings.

Since you have already made a recording, I'm going to ask you to post the recording at viewforum.php?f=21 and ask for help. Just say your volume is uneven, and you need help. I am sure it will be forthcoming. After you've resolved your problems, please re-upload here, and we'll be glad to proof listen the recording.

Best wishes,

Sue (Book Coordinator)

Hi, This article concerns a salt industry which flourished in the early 1800's around Equality, Illinois, on the Saline River in Southern Illinois, and which employed slave labor. I was totally unfamiliar with this facet of Illinois history. When Smith visited the area in 1904, remains of the old works were still visible, and Smith was still able to find persons who could show him around and share their memories with him.

This is an informational pamphlet published by the College of Industrial Arts at the State College for Women, Denton, Texas, in 1920.

As I was reading it, I kept thinking, "Man, this author really doesn't like georgette!" It's her example of an inappropriate fabric in almost every situation!

The costumes worn to school by the high school girls of our country have been gradually going from bad to worse with the years." (1920)

Ah... Thanks, Colleen, for this enjoyable look back at fashion! :) In my high-school days, it was peter pan collars, pearls, and "twin sets"--yuck!
