Thank you, Tricia, for this most interesting look at a facet of the World War I war effort! I had not heard of the Four Minute Men before. The list of speech topics was quite revealing. I heard about them on PBS. We're watching American Experience: The Great War.
I wanted to get hold of a few of the "bulletins", which gave the data and talking points for each of the topics. But I haven't found any yet.
I'd guess, "get it from the government; they're the only reliable source." It's crazy how much free speech and dissent was quashed during 1917-1919. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sedition_Act_of_1918I wonder what the speakers had to say on the suggested topic: "Where did you get your facts?"

It reminds me of the teacher's loyalty oath 1949
I, as a teacher and citizen, pledge allegiance to the United States of America, to the State of Rhode Island and to the American public school system.
I solemnly promise to support the constitution and laws of Nation and State, to acquaint myself with the laws of the State relating to public education, and also the regulations and instructions of my official superiors, and faithfully carry them out.
I further promise to protect the school rights of my pupils, to conserve the democracy of school citizenship, to honor public education as a principle of free government, to respect the profession of education as public service, and to observe its ethical principles and rules of professional conduct.

When I was sworn in as a police officer in the department I worked for, the oath actually still contained the phrase "I am not and never have been a member of the Communist Party or any other organization working to overthrow the United States." This was in 2003!
I did hear that the oath was revised and this sentence was removed a few years later.

Thank you, Craig! It is certainly illuminating to dip into the correspondence of two learned persons such as Fichte and Kant. I cannot even begin to imagine today's texting and tweeting public being able to present their ideas in such clear and detailed fashion, let alone discuss the implications and consequences of their beliefs on Fichte and Kant's level of discourse. The reading is PL OK.
As you know, Craig, the catalog will only accept one author per selection. When there are two authors, the second author has to be mentioned in the notes to the introduction to the collection (which I write up for the catalog). I'm inclined in this instance to list Kant as the author and Fichte as the secondary, but I will leave it up to you to make the final decision. Please let me know which way you want to go. Thanks.
