Hi Arlene
We had a wonderful time in Greece.
Although we have been back some time, we went up to Heysham to stay with Richard, our youngest - and meet his future father-in-law and Steve's step-mother (whom we had met once before - when she was producing a programme of readings for the BBC - she is now retired). We had a lovely long weekend.
Our weather is unbelievable at the moment - 29 to 30 degrees C. every day, with no rain - we haven't experienced anything like it since 1976. The gardens and the cropss are suffering, though.

Here is Chapter 20; I hope you enjoy it.

A late happy birthday to Helen!

Chapter 20 was the treat I'd been looking forward to all week. I've marked it PL OK. Lots of overtime this week, and more next week. But tomorrow night I'll take some time out to enjoy Chapter 21.

Is it really true that the sunlight is a different color in Greece?

Chapter 21 is also marked PL OK. Can you imagine what would happen if anyone took a horsewhip to someone in the streets these days? They certainly wouldn't be sitting down to a light meal and a bottle of claret the same afternoon!

Hi Arlene

Horsewhipping indeed!

Here is Chapter 22
https://librivox.org/uploads/maryannspiegel/drthorne_22_trollope.mp3 26:23.0

The weather is getting hotter - and we are beginning to have moorland fires - although nothing like as serious as yours. The garden is suffering terribly.

Helen is now on the Isle of White, working hard and stressfully, overseeing sailing instruction. I go to join her Friday - just for the weekend - it is our wedding anniversary (45 years) Saturday.

Hi Arlene

We had a lovely weekend.

Helen is due home this weekend, because we are hoping to meet a Norwegian friend and his son who are flying home from the USA and are changing planes at Gatwick - which is not much more than 20 minutes away from us.

Here is Chapter 23.

Chapter 24 is PL OK.

We had rain yesterday as well, but are headed back to the warmer-than-normal summer weather by tomorrow. I love it, but most of the rest of creation is looking a little stressed. At least the smoke has not been as bad as the past few summers.

Hi Arlene

Here is Chapter 25

https://librivox.org/uploads/maryannspiegel/drthorne_25_trollope.mp3 42:40.5

Sorry I missed the weekend, but I was down on the Isle of Wight - Helen's last weekend there. There were a number of "Old Gaffers" - gaff-rigged mostly antique sailing boats which included several dinghies, so the Sailing Centre helped arrange a race for them, which Helen and I entered, along with one other of the Centre's dinghies.
It was an exciting race and I now feel extremely stiff!

Hope you enjoy this chapter.

Oh, those thigh bones! Wouldn't you just love to see that scene done on the stage? How hard it would be for the actors to keep a straight face while disputing with each other, and with the audience snickering in all the wrong places! I wonder how many chuckles you had to edit out.

Chapters 25 and 26 marked PL OK.

I would have missed your chapter last weekend, even if you had had it ready. My family and I were up in the mountains, off the grid, celebrating my parents' 60th wedding anniversary. So much fun!

Hi Arlene

Your weekend sounded fun.

Here is Chapter 27, the last for a couple of weeks as we are off tomorrow (at the crack of dawn) to stay with our youngest for the weekend, then down to our middle son, where I shall be staying for the week to look after our 4 and a half year old granddaughter during the mornings, as her school doesn't start until the following week and both her parents will be at work.
Unfortunately Helen has a busy week with commitments she can't get out of, so I'm on my own! Somewhat daunting, particularly since our children are all boys!
