[COMPLETE]Personal Narrative of Travels Vol 3 - annise
Hi David --
I have done a small experiment and I am afraid you are the "blind" guinea pig if you don't mind. Sorry, no human experimentation ethics form available.
Chapter 101, a wee short one, is uploaded for listening.
1:51.1, 90 dB
Would you please tell me what you think of the audio quality? How do you think it compares with other recordings? Then I will let you in on the nature of the experiment.
Thanks
Gail

Gail,
The number, 101, tipped me off as to where the file was. There aren't many books with that many sections. The file seems to have less bass and if I may speculate perhaps "less processed." Within a few seconds I get lost in the story and they (I also listened to 97) begin to sound very similar.

Hi -
Here is Section 42.
https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/personalnarrative3_42_humboldt.mp3
24:14.5, 88.5 dB.
I had to both amplify and compress to get it up to a decent volume again. Darned Blue Snowball - so many things that are sub-optimal with it. So hopefully it sounds OK.
Just two more sections to go and we are finished with AvH -- and can move on to APH. However, I need to write an intro...
Thanks
Gail

Hi --
Section 43 has now been uploaded for DPLing.
https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/personalnarrative3_43_humboldt.mp3

Hi Anne -
We are nearing the end of this project. I have recorded the final section, but not done the sound editing yet.
I'm thinking of the cover. Are you keen to do this cover as well? I have found the images (URLs below) which seems to be in the public domain.
There is quite a bit about both slavery and sugar cane in Cuba and the Caribbean in Volume 3.
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Slaves_cutting_the_sugar_cane_-_Ten_Views_in_the_Island_of_Antigua_(1823),_plate_IV_-_BL.jpg
I have also found maps of the Caribbean.

All three images seem to be in the public domain.
Cheers

I was planning to - I'll have a look. I'd had a look a week ago while I was waiting for an upload which was working the opposite to the proverb about pots - it was a case of "unwatched uploads drop out" and thus was my third try .
Some of the most interesting ones illustrations are too detailed for the size image we need

Hi Anne and David -
The final section has been uploaded for this project. If it is PL OK, then my part in this effort is complete. Volumes I and II were both 22+ hours, so a lot of listening for those who decide to plough through these books.
https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/personalnarrative3_44_humboldt.mp3
33 min 25.7 sec, 88.3 dB
Thanks so much for your help with all three of these von Humboldt volumes. They are really a remarkable record of his and Bonpland's journey and of their scholarship.
Again, many thanks - but on to the Southern Alps with Arthur Harper!
Cheers

All done , another 18mins 9 secs worth. Congratulations on finishing the 3 volumes
This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project: https://librivox.org/personal-narrative-of-travels1799-1804-3-by-alexander-von-humboldt/
Let me know if something would be better changed, I'm working on the cover but keep getting diverted into reading more about the images - I didn't know that the USA banned the slave trade so early so the next 50 plus years were all home grown - you'd think they would have looked after their "assets" better.

Thanks Anne. If you think there are any more points I should make in the introduction please let me know. In V3 Humboldt talks about the illicit slave trade in the 19th century. There was still a lot. Cheers. Gail
