Trivia, or The Art of Walking the Streets of London by John Gay (1685 - 1732).

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project: https://librivox.org/trivia-by-john-gay/
John Gay's Trivia is a satirical guide to walking the streets of London, written in mock heroic style. Learn how to avoid pickpockets, wig thieves, falling masonry and the contents of chamber pots, and above all else how to dress well for all weathers and avoid mud splatters. Your daily walk will never be the same again! ( Phil Benson)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/triviaorartofwal00gayjuoft
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I've changed the chapters in the intros to books , I've assumed you'll read books I II and III as your sections. The cataloguing will need to wait till later for me to finish it - I've a meeting

Ha ha! I hope it's worth the wait!

Book 1 ready for PL: https://librivox.org/uploads/annise/trivia_01_gay.mp3 - 18:01

I'm not planning to read the introduction, btw, it was written 200 years later and just seems to summarise the poem.

Yes, that's right, I say 'book', not 'chapter'.

Off to a good start! A couple of notes, since I tend to ratchet up the PLing for poetry:

2.16-2.20, p. 3, l. 11
To pave thy Realm, and smooth the [heard thy] broken Ways,

7.13-7.16, p. 6, l. 96, omission
[And] Blood in purple Torrents dies the Stones;

11.17-11.20, p. 9, l. 168, check pronunciation of Niobe
Then Niobe dissolves into a Tear,
http://howjsay.com/index.php?word=niobe&x=0&y=0&wid=2048#
https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/niobe
These agree on the vowel sound but not the stress. I only knew the one used by Howjsay, so you learn something new every day!

Anne, was there any little kink in how this project is displaying? When I tried to look at the project thread to PL I had to log in to see it. I don't remember this happening before. Is it something you've encountered?

Thanks, Erin, I will look after Book 1 when you have finished with 2 & 3. Oh, those Greek pronunciations! They catch me out every time.

For Section 2, I already have two PL notes to self. Pronunciations of Eurydice (twice around 18:00) and equipage (around 26:00).

I couldn't see anything wrong with the link but they aaare very long so I recopied and pasted - it works for me, does it for you ?
re how words were said 300 years ago - who knows ? and adding it was meant to scan and rhyme , there was probably poetic license anyhow, so my pennyworth would be the way it works is the right way :D

Anne - thank you, that seemed to do the trick. I have no idea why it wasn't letting me see it without logging in, but it did feel like John Gay was top secret and this book was classified information!

Phil - thanks for the heads up on some of the notes. Here goes, for your consideration for Book II:

2.12-2.15, p. 16, l. 36
From smutty Dangers guard [heard guide] they threaten'd Coat:

16.09-16.17, p. 25, ll. 275-276
Eurydice (twice)

24.55-24.57, p. 30, l. 425
Thames- [heard Thomas-] street gives Cheeses;

25.01-25.03, p. 30, l. 426, omission
…[and] Monmouth-street old Suits.

25.18-25.21, p. 30, l. 431
The bending Shelves with pond'rous Scholiasts groan,

25.43-25.45, p. 31, l. 438
...or Stagyra's Sage.

25.56-26.01, p. 31, l. 442, extra word
And [And] Squirts read Garth, 'till Apozems grow cold.

Stuff I heard for Book Three:

2.50-2.54, p. 35, l. 46
Or on [heard in] Westphalia's fatt'ning Chest-nuts fed,

3.27-3.31, p. 35, l. 57, self-correction
...whose Hand to Repine whose Hand to Rapine bred,

9.01, p. 38, l. 156, omission
Should ne'er encroach [where Posts] defend the Street.

10.15, p. 39, l. 179, omission

I'd stay well away, if I were you, especially if you are passing through the 18th century!

Thanks for all these the PL notes, it will be a few days before I can get them done.

Meanwhile, would you join me for Songs for the Millions - Benjamin Stott? It's another shortish one that has been lying unedited on my laptop for a while. Erin, did you recommend that to me? There is very little about him on the web, and I have no idea how I came across him!

No kidding about London being a dangerous place! Listening to this is a nice sidelight on Polly Peachum and Macheath. I did really enjoy the Hogarth illustrations - it's obvious, but he's exactly who I would have slipped in if I were creating my own super-duper lavish edition.

No hurry on the PL notes. It's not a rush job, everybody here is a volunteer.

Of course I'll join you for Songs for the Millions. What kind of woman would I be if I said no to an offer like that?

I don't recall if I recommended him to you. But yes, if you want recommendations, I have some! That's the problem with trying to catch up on centuries of interesting out-of-copyright books - there's more to record than I can handle by myself!
