Song: Eternity of Love Protested by Thomas Carew (1595 - 1640).

This project is now complete!
All audio files can be found on our catalog page:

Thomas Carew (pronounced "Carey") (1595 - 1640) was one of the Cavalier poets, a group associated with the unfortunate King Charles I, who was a notable connoisseur of poetry. Other poets in this school included Robert Herrick, Richard Lovelace. John Suckling and Ben Jonson. Carew’s verse generally eschews epic and grandiose subjects, and focuses on more intimate and profane matters. In the words of Edmund Gosse: “Carew's poems, at their best, are brilliant lyrics of the purely sensuous order.” ( Algy Pug)
Each week a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!

Song: Eternity of Love Protested by Thomas Carew, read for LibriVox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, your location, and/or your personal url.]
Then read the poem:
HOW ill doth he deserve a lover's name,
Whose pale weak flame
Cannot retain
His heat, in spite of absence or disdain;
But doth at once, like paper set on fire,
Burn and expire;
True love can never change his seat,
Nor did he ever love, that could retreat.

That noble flame which my breast keeps alive
Shall still survive
When my soul's fled;
Nor shall my love die when my body's dead,
That shall wait on me to the lower shade,
And never fade;
My very ashes in their urn
Shall, like a hallow'd lamp, forever burn.

At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.

Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording.

Here is my attempt, at 1:15

https://librivox.org/uploads/aradlaw/songeternityofloveprotested_carew_vb_128kb.mp3

Thank you.

PS. I never did ID3 tags for a weekly or fortnightly before (stopped doing them a while ago, many MCs explicitly state to omit those), do we need them? If so, I'll add them and re-upload...

Reading is PL OK.

You are correct about the ID tags - opening post has been corrected.

Dear Algy,

here is my recording - my first attempt in English! I hope it is OK, please give me feedback if it is hard to understand or for whatever reason it doesn't sound right.

I think there is just a typing mistake! If you follow the link to the original book, you get instead of

"Nor did her ever love, that could retreat." -which doesn't really make sense-

the correct line:

"Nor did he ever love that can retreat."

Here is the link of the recording:

1:15

kind regards,

Boris

Thanks Boris - both for the reading and alerting me to the error in the text (which has now been corrected).

I had no trouble following your reading which was quite dramatic. :clap:

Just one small correction required:
0:35
that could retreat.
I heard
that can retreat.

I also noticed that there were a few plosives.

Cheers

Dear Algy,

thank you for your feedback :thumbs:

Indeed, the text source reads "can" and not "could" - check again:

https://archive.org/details/poemsmasqueoftho00care

But if you prefer "could" please let me know, I'll change it then. Also if I need to change some of the plosives (I probably got a bit too close to the mic) just tell me.

Kind regards,

Boris

Hi Boris

Various editions of this poem have the following variants for the line in question:

Nor did he ever love that could retreat.
https://archive.org/details/selectionfrompoe00careiala
ww.luminarium.org/sevenlit/carew/eternity.htm

Nor did her ever love that could retreat.
https://allpoetry.com/Thomas-Carew

The edition you mentioned is the only one which has the reading:
Nor did he ever love that can retreat.

Based on the previous line both "he" and "her" could make sense. In the first case the poet would be saying:
He who backs off never loved in the first place;

and in the latter:
True love is unchanging and does not love her who retreats from him.

Given the confusion over the text, I will allow the use of "can." Reading is therefore PL OK.

Cheers

I have a curious problem. Since my last Windows update, the numbers, but for 5 and 6, have ceased to operate on my machine. Hmm. Glad to have this problem solved - found a solution on the Net to exactly that, tap Alt button five times swiftly and, amazingly, it didn't work. So now in this specific case I can't download the file in the format required. No numbers. Any possible solutions gratefully received.
