At The Sign of The Greedy Pig by Charles S. Brooks (1878 - 1934).

"Sometimes, in a mood of Spanish castles, there flits across my fancy the vision of an ancient city on a hill-top, with lofty battlements thrust upward from the rock and towers that stand on tip-toe…. Our stage is the square of this ancient city, seen dimly in the night.... The time of our play is remote and I choose to think the world is flat, that comets are of evil prophecy and witches still ride on the windy moon...." (Author) Published in the same book as "Wappin' Wharf: A Frightful Comedy of Pirates", this story is subtitled "A Frightful Comedy of Beggars". The play describes skulduggery at the tavern with The Sign of The Greedy Pig. Will the beggars be hung as vagrants? Will true love triumph at the end? (ToddHW)

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/stream/frightfulplays01broo#page/128/mode/2up
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Todd, would it be possible to give this link in the first post: https://archive.org/stream/frightfulplays01broo#page/128/mode/2up
Then our readers don't have to skip all the Wappin' Wharf text to find our play.

A character called Yank, a hangman has lines in act 2, from page 195, but is not in MW. If you add him I would like to take the role. Otherwise I will read Squeak.

you are correct, Alan. I'll insert the character and assign you to Yank. So you feel like a cheerful hangman, ey ? ;)

Another question: the "workman" in the MW, is he supposed to be the Watchman ? There is a watchman in the first Act, not sure I encountered a workman. :hmm:
Also if I leave the direct speeches that are embedded in the narrative, to the respective players, there is one sentence for the Apple-Woman in Act 2 (on p. 182).

Todd, I have just recorded 1 hour worth of stage directions  Now on to the editing phase. I hope to get the first act in today. It's a super cool plot. 8-)

You are now in the MW. I had inserted Second Villager 3 times - and 2 of those times were Yank and a forgotten Bell-Ringer.

Thanks, Todd

Workman, watchman. Just old eyes and a scanned script I fear. And I'll add the Apple-Woman in Act 2.

There is a huge cast of small roles. I have a hunch we may add more as the play gets on  I'll dig them out by and by while I PL the others ;)

btw your eyes are not that bad. The watchman is compared to a workman, that's probably how the error happened. I'll change it in the MW.

Here's work for you, Todd  The narrator for the first Act is done. I spent the entire afternoon on this, now I need a serious break. :? But it's a great play, and a great plot and interesting characters.

For the dramatis personae, I simply read them off in the order of the MW, as they were not written out in the book. I guess in the end you will somehow group them according to their importance in the play. :hmm:

Please take a special listen from 8:18: "Twist squats on the step of the church" till 10:20: "and points with excited uplifted finger". I noticed in the editing phase that the birds in my garden where twittering during some of my lines. :? If you think it's too annoying, then I'll re-read those 2 minutes. Just tell me. I can take it.

Recording time: 26:52 min.

Oh and I pitied Twist soooo much  The three scoundrel beggars are so nasty to him. They fully deserve their jobs in the second act.
