El crimen del padre Amaro de José Maria de Eça de Queirós (1845 - 1900). Traducido por Ramón del Valle-Inclán (1866 - 1936)

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project: https://librivox.org/el-crimen-del-padre-amaro-by-jose-maria-de-eca-de-queiros/

( Phileas Fogg)

Olà, Victor, remember me ? :D It looks like you need someone to check your recordings. I think I can make some time this afternoon, so let me start with the first sections.

I don't know the book yet, so I hope it is a good one

and already finished with the first chapter. Interesting start already. I remember your expressive boisterous reading still, Victor  Here the two clergymen are really funny.

So if I understand this correctly, they are expecting a new priest for the church, a very young man, and they want him to live together with a widow and her young daughter. And now they fear that the people might talk scandal if he lives with that young woman ;)

Looking at the title of the book, the people may be right  Temptation for the padre.

Textually, no errors, but you completely forgot to leave the 5 seconds at the end. It ends quite abruptly. Please insert 5 seconds of silence.

On to the next chapter...

Chapter 2, and finally the good padre has arrived in his new home. I knew he would be good-looking and of course the young woman is also good-looking and very lively. There will be temptation in that house.

The final sentence is very revealing, already Amaro is thinking about Amelia undressing. And we’re only at the second chapter !!!

Only found one small error, easily corrected:

> at 7:54: (p. 18): stumble and repeat: “Pida cuanto” – can be cut out once

the rest perfect

And now comes a long chapter  But I like the story so far.

oh I'm sorry you are having computer problems. So for the moment no new chapters will be coming. Well, you know that I don't mind waiting LOL I have enough other projects to work in to pass the time ;)

Meanwhile, chapter 3 was great. Interesting to hear the backstory of Amaro. He always seems to be interested in women, I don't think that priest was the right vocation for him

oh, and I almost got a heart-attack when you cleaned your nose so forcefully LOL maybe I had it a bit too loud there :help:

found two small things:

> at 36:55: (p. 43): repetition: “De Feiron”, can be cut out once

> at 49:39 and 53:24: (p. 49 and 51): wow the song by Haydn is super ! Is it the correct tune or did you invent something ? It sounds great. Though you say “asleep and dead” instead of “dead and asleep”, but I think it sounds so great like this, I don't think you need to correct this. It sounds much more melodic this way around actually. But I wanted to mention it, in case you want to do the correct words.

Great job so far !

had time for another chapter :) wonderful singing :9: And what is this game they are playing in the evening ? Some sort of card game ? I didn't really understand the rules LOL

Something strange happened with your song-texts here :?

> at 8:48: (p. 57) “con la cabeza un poco torcida” – you say “tanto”, which is exactly the opposite

> at 25:09: (p. 64): I don’t really understand what you are singing here, but it’s NOT the text from the book: “Adíos, ángel mío, voy á partir sin ti

> at 27:12: (p. 65): same here: you are not singing the correct song “Un día, en fin, de este vivir fatal, reposré en obscura soledad”. Did you use another text ? I cannot understand why the song would be so different :hmm: In any case, this is too different to keep it, it would be changing what the author wrote. I'm sorry about that because it was a good song. :(

Hello Sonia. I didnt change what the author wrote. The aria of Haydn is named pastoral song or my mother bids me bind my hair and the text of the original song says the village seems asleep OR dead https://youtu.be/RfZ7KZwNZ0U
As for the others song i digged the original text in portuguese and found the original songs in portuguese. So i dont feel i betrayed the author which is Eça de Queiroz and not Ramon del Valle Inclan who is the translator (in the case was really him and not just a pen name as many researchers of this particular translation affirms)

oh so you sang the Portuguese text ? Well, this is a dilemma now. I think we need to read from the translated source though. I mean, when I read a Shakespeare text translated in German, I would not all of a sudden read one poem in English, but I would stick to the translation till the end. You are reading Valle Inclan's Spanish text right now, and not Eça de Queiroz' original.

Not sure how this is usually handled with songs :hmm: Katherine, any idea ?

last chapter for today, then I need a rest. Now Amelia is quite interested in Amaro as well  there is tension building up.

> at 0:43 and 1:16: (p. 71) again the song text is a bit different, you end the line with “mio niño” instead of “la fuente”, but I think this is trivial and needs not to be changed. Or are you reading the Portuguese here again ?

> at 14:29: (p. 77) here you are jumping one entire line. I underlined the missing words: Durante dos dias anduvo en enguanas, desgreñada, llorando á gritos. Doña Maria...

> at 23:07: (p. 81) repeat “Quien es?” can be cut out here

enough for today...

so I discussed this with another mod and it's as I thought: we have to stick to our "don't change the text" rule. You have decided in this solo to read the Spanish translation, not the Portuguese original, so you need to stick with what the translator wrote in his book. He had his reasons to translate the song as well. Probably so the audience understands the text ;) For the English song, he chose to keep the original English lines, so there you are safe, but the Portuguese needs to be read in Spanish translation, like it is in the book you are using as source.
