This book is now complete and can be downloaded from the LibriVox catalogue: http://librivox.org/ulysses-by-james-joyce/

Ulysses, by James Joyce
(special rules)

OK I am not sure what's got into me tonight, but ... with a name like Hugh McGuire and a birthday of June 16, you'd think i'd have read this book. God knows I've tried and tried. Well, 8 months from now I hope to be able to listen to it.

There are special rules for this recording:

1. UPDATE: editing allowed but not required ... you can record it as is. bad sound, backround noise, whatever, will add to the experience, I *think* JJ would approve
2. extra points for recording in a pub or public place (on the street is good)
3. bonus points if you record in dublin
4. you are encouraged to get others to help you record your chapter
5. more extra points for getting several people to record with you in a pub.
6. square those points if those other people are strangers
7. Target completion date: midnight, June 14 (2006)

8. official release: June 16, 2006 (bloomsday). Update: current target June 14, 2007.
9. UPDATE: once we get full subscription to all the chapters, multiple recordings will be encouraged (ie more than one recording of each). but we have to at least get volunteers for all 18 first.

When you finish your chapters, use www.yousendit.com and send it to:

Please check the Recording Notes thread before recording:

If this is your first recording, you'll also find this useful:

Now for chapter assignments. Again, as noted above, you can get others to help you with your chapters, however you wish them to do so. There are no chapter headings, but there are 18 chapters, I'll identify them by their 1st few words.

OMG!

I didn't think we'd tackle this one for a long time... maybe start with the Dubliners... work up slowly, gradually...

Well, jump in with both feet, I suppose!

I'll go for 5. "by lorries along sir john rogerson's ...

Hopefully I'll be done by June...

:)

Yipe. I've never read it either. Intimidating! But I can't NOT read a chapter... how about #2?

As for no editing... I have to clear my throat efter every couple of sentences and it will be WAY annoying if I leave in all the HRR'HRRUMs . I'll edit those out, but nothing else, ok? :)

There's no way I can do a no-editing read, I trip over my own tongue at least once a page...

OK, this is a majorly scary challenge, but how can I pass it up? I wiill read outside. Japanese voices will intrude in the background. I will round up a friend or two to read with me. Then we will repair to a pub to recover!

Give me 4. Any chapter that begins with "ate with relish" has to be good.

Sweet jesus. Count me in, please. I would love

3. "ineluctable modality of the visible ..."

(to be crass but honest, there's WANKING in this chapter, and when else can I have the chance to read -that-? If it's been taking, I'll take whatever's up for grabs-- god knows there's something saucy in just about all of it.)

And I won't be in Dublin, but I can read it while drinking for a half-point?

I play bar trivia every Friday with a group of friends. After many drinks we then retire to one of the noisier bars in town. If you'd entrust me with chapter six, "Martin Cunningham...," I will give it my best to have me and my friends give it a try though the only remote recorder I have is one of the tiny micro-cassette ones. Of course I'll attempt to grab whatever strangers I can.

Hi, Dan. Welcome to LibriVox. I knew that Joyce would entice you...

I can't wait to hear how you do your section.

W00t! I've got readers lined up, and a photographer, too.

For anyone who's in Tokyo and wants to come along, it looks like we'll be at the Dubliners in Akasaka on Wednesday, December 7. Should be crowded, noisy and a lot of fun.

Drop me a mail for all the details.
