Common Sense in the Household: A Manual of Practical Housewifery by Marion Harland (1830 - 1922).

This project is now complete! all audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project: https://librivox.org/common-sense-in-the-household-by-marion-harland/
This is a practical guide to running a household in 1883. Marion Harland not only walks us through a number of important topics such as how to select and manage servants and organise a dinner party (best engage a good caterer), but also includes a number of recipes. Even today's listeners may find a new favourite dish among the recipes contained in this volume. ( Carolin)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/48804
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    6. Note: some recipes are marked with a star to show that they are extra simple. No need to mention the star in your recording, just leave it out. Thank you!

Yes!! .... my dinner guest are getting sooooo tired of moose, that I thought for our next dinner gathering I'd branch out and prepare the Brunswick Stew .... however since I am no fan of Lima beans, I decided to go with the Ragoût of Squirrels instead.

Paired with a nice 2003 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru, it should be quite lovely!

Carolin,

Some of the receipts are marked with a +, to indicate a simple or reliable recipe. I have read these as "[recipe title] star". Is that what you want? Or should we ignore the +? Or call it something else?

Greetings -

I am just getting back to PL'ing after a four year hiatus. Not sure if I am ready to commit to being a DPL but I am ready to help out as much as I can. I mean, PL'ing and food recipes, how can you go wrong?

Oh right, sorry, i meant to put a note in the first post and forgot. Id just leave that out. If you dont mind cutting those again that would be great, but if your sections are otherwise complete, just leave it in :) thank you!
