A HOUSE OF GENTLEFOLK by Ivan Turgenev (1818 - 1883). Translated by Constance Garnett (1861 - 1946)

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/a-house-of-gentlefolk-by-ivan-turgenev/

The novel titled in Russian "Дворянское Гнездо" (Dvoryanskoye Gnezdo, sometimes translated as Home of the Gentry, A Nest of the Gentlefolk, A Nest of the Gentry) is considered a sequel to "Rudin". It is the story of the protagonist Fyodor Ivanych Lavretsky, a son of a nobleman and a serf, brought up at his family's country estate home by a severe maiden aunt, often thought to be based on Turgenev's own mother, who was known for her cruelty. (Summary by tovarisch, based on Wikipedia article)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/5721
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Additional information:

Number of chapters: 45 plus an epilogue. I propose to combine some chapters to make sections reasonably timed and make epilogue separate, and that's why the intros are going to be "Chapters one and two of ..." and outro "End of chapters one and two". We can replace the intro with "Section #" and outro with "End of section #", if you think it better.

Total number of words: just over 62000, which hopefully makes a 10-12 hour book.

If I can get through a section a week (doable, I think), then I need about half a year to record it.

May I volunteer as DPL? I have enjoyed recording Turgenev and would enjoy even more hearing your project.

As far as chapters vs. section in the intros/outros, I will leave that up to you. Whichever way you think will be easier for listeners to follow.
