Wappin' Wharf: A Frightful Comedy of Pirates by Charles S. Brooks (1878 - 1934).

We had hoped that our drama's scene might lie on a pirate ship at sea. We had wished for a swaying mast, full-set with canvas—a typhoon to smother our stage in wind. We had hoped to walk a victim off the plank, with the sea roaring in the wings. But our plot deals stubbornly with us. Alas, our pirates grow old and stiff. They have retired, as we say, from active practice and live in easy luxury on shore. Yet we shall see that their villainy still thrives. ( Prologue)
  • Avast, it is a play about pirates! Gender neutral pirates, of course. And Killer Kitty is our DPL: cross her and ye may have to walk the plank!

This work is complete. All audio files can be found at https://librivox.org/wappin-wharf-a-frightful-comedy-of-pirates-by-charles-s-brooks/

I'd like to claim the role of Duke please Todd.

Guess I get to spend this play legless.

Cheers,
Chris

P.S. BTW, "Clovelly" is stressed on the penultimate syllable, not the first ... thus "Cluh-VELL-ee".

I'm all in for some cheesy pirate shenanigans. :D May I lay claim to the scurvy role of Red Joe?

Thank you for the fast claims! Note that Killer Kitty is doing the stage directions. I suggest you do exactly what she says!

"Patch-Eye is melancholy—almost sentimental at times. He would stab a man, but grieve upon a sparrow. At heart we fear he is a coward, and stupid."

My dad used to tell me bed-time stories about "Black Patch the Pirate," and this would be fun part to do.

And, we ALWAYS do what Kitty says! As long as she keep the grog a comin', we be fine.

Reading through the play, I see that there seems to be a love-triangle involving Duke, Darlin', and Betsy.

Darlin's grog-brewing skills seem to have attracted Duke; Betsy doesn't seem to have any, but that does not appear to matter.

Perhaps it's her Beaujolais that Duke is after?

Here I am, your DPL, which for the duration of this play of course means "Dashing Pirate Lady" 8-) Todd of course is your MC (Master Commander, what else).

I see some of my unruly pirates have already arrived. 'tis well. Looking forward to this. And yes, I am the narrator and you should always do what I say. I see Larry already knows this rule.

Let the rum begin to flow...I mean let the fun begin.

thanks for this, I need to say this name and didn't know how to pronounce it. I was opting for CLO-velly (like slovenly), but yours sounds better.

I want to get into this love-triangle! Could I play Darlin' please? I can brew a grog or two when in a pinch... :D

I'd like a show of hands, please. How many of you are EVER going to let Kitty forget that she has said that she is the "Dashing Pirate Lady"?

Note that in addition to being your MC, I am also the BC of this project. And in this case perhaps it means "Bad Comedian". So let me start by asking Chris: if there is a love-triangle here involving Duke, is he is going to get "kilt" in this play too?

Thanks, Todd

Welcome to the triangle. Watch out for the sharp points!

What's with the dashing? Is she saying rude words?

What has eight arms, eight legs, and eight eyes?

Eight pirates.

I thought it would be Brig Captain, or something :hmm:

 ok enough of this if you don't want to be put on kitchen-scrubbin' duty, Chris

All right, in the meantime I spent the last few hours honing on the Act 1 narration, which I think turned out quite dramatic. Here it is, Todd, for your scrutiny:

https://librivox.org/uploads/toddhw/wappinwharf_narrator_1_128kb.mp3
Recording time: 22:21 min.

BTW I omitted the Dramatis Personae, as I thought we would include them right at the end (or beginning) of the introduction. If you'd rather have them in the first Act, I can change that quickly.

Absolutely perfect. If folks don't get their other parts in quick, I could just catalog this narration file as it is and any listener would be pleased to hear it.

So listen up you other scurvy dogs, and make your entries worthy of being added to this masterpiece of storytelling by our DPL. It could become editor's choice between adding your voice or leaving the current blank spots. (Oh, wait a minute. Wasn't it "the blank spots" that did in Cap'n Flint at the Benbow Inn? Maybe I have my pirates mixed up. Or maybe they are just mixed up pirates....)

Thanks, Todd
