Prejudices, First Series by H. L. Mencken (1880 - 1956). Thi

This project can now be found in our catalog at https://librivox.org/prejudices-first-series-by-h-l-mencken/

Mencken sharpens his pen and in a collection of short essays delivers acerbic opinions on issues and persons of the time. Among his targets in this volume (the first of six) are critics, H.G. Wells Thorstein Veblen, Arnold Bennett, William Dean Howells, Irvin S. Cobb. Mencken's critiques are delivered against a background of his own well known ethnic, racial, religious, and sectional prejudices. (It is said that the only think Mencken loved about the Southern United States was his wife, who hailed from Alabama.) Not for the faint of heart, Mencken's prickly, yet unapologetic, prose reveals a window into American attitudes at the time they were written and their influences on the larger American culture. 1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/53538
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Phil:

Thanks for setting up the MW. I think we're ready to roll. I've already heard from Barbara, so (as they say in your part of the world "laissez le bon temps rouler."

On another issue (prompted by your bon mot about "truth": While my mind was wandering recently (always a dangerous thing), I came upon a concept comparison I have yet to be able to work out--it runs thusly:

reality TV is to reality as ??????? is to truth.

Just a little something upon which to cogitate.

Some daunting reading here with the plethora of names!
What a barbed tongue hath he.
Well, I won't get to them real soon, but I'd be glad to take on Sections 6 and 21.
On the road again, so delays are possible

The reading is fine Philip. I enjoyed it. But the MC will need to know the length of the Section (M:S). I've marked Section 1 PL Notes for the time being.

Mencken often takes me by surprise and I give an involuntary chuckle.

Best,

Barbara

Barbara:

Thanks for your excellent PL. I've posted the duration (and went ahead and marked it PL-OK). I'm having some significant computer difficulty at the moment which is being difficult to pin down and fix...I hope I've got it fixed again, but the last 19 hours have been off and on.
