Rebellion by Joseph M. Patterson (1879 - 1946).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/rebellion-by-joseph-patterson/

Cinematic in style and rich in characterization, this novel is set in early 20th century Chicago – in a barroom, at home, and in the workplace. An alcoholic convinces himself of the reasonableness of “just one drink”. A priest defends the Church’s position on the indissolubility of marriage. It is a story of relationships impacted by human frailties, unusual generosity, and the influence of religion.
“It is almost photographic in its accuracy of detail.” – The New York Herald
“Every person in it is someone you know.” – The Call
“The author permits the representatives of the old order to present their arguments. For the new order he presents simply the facts of such a case as Georgia’s. It is for this reason that the book is strong.” –The New York Times
The author’s personal history, including his founding of the NY Daily News, is covered at wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Medill_Patterson.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

The MW is ready, Ann.

I think (hope) this novel will be worthwhile. It centers on a marriage gone bad and the Catholic Church's banning of divorce. One of the pluses for me is that the chapters don't appear to be overly long, something I'm finding increasingly attractive. Just skimming it a little, I've noticed some unpleasant language, but we've been through that before and will just have to take it in stride.

I found nothing recorded on LV by this author. His bio on Wikipedia is interesting. It mentions his being "one of the most significant newspaper publishers in the United States, founding New York's Daily News and introducing the tabloid". For many years it was the most widely read paper in the U S. (I don't know if it still is.) Pretty impressive, even if it's not exactly the N Y Times.

Just when you think you have the direction of this thing figured out, he takes another path. Here's 6.

See you next week, Ann. We're going to spend the weekend visiting friends in D.C. No politics (I hope)!

The weather wasn't great but the weekend in DC was, as always, a nice break for us. I highly recommend a visit if and when you come east. Those iconic buildings are still breathtaking even though we've seen them many times. And the Smithsonian museums on the mall between the White House and Capitol are terrific and free. (Your tax dollars well spent!)

7 and 8 are ready.
