The Promise of American Life by Herbert Croly (1869 - 1930).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-promise-of-american-life-herbert-croly/
(The book is said to "offer a manifesto of Progressive beliefs" that "anticipated the transition from competitive to corporate capitalism and from limited government to the welfare state." By Croly’s death in 1930, only 7,500 copies of The Promise of American Life had been sold. Despite this, the book was immensely influential, even influencing Theodore Roosevelt to adopt the platform of The New Nationalism.)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/14422
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I'd like to be both the MC and DPl on this book. Will set this project up asap.

edit: Will check this in the morning but you can start adding titles anytime. Of course if you notice any glitches pass them long. I'm still pretty new at setting up the MW.

Hello,

I have been thinking that perhaps we should split up the chapters by their subsections. It would make it easier for me to routinely update, it would make prooflistening easier, and I think that listening post-completion might be fostered a bit more by 15 minute recordings as opposed to hour-long recordings. There would be 55 sections, instead of the original 12.

Most chapters have 3 sections. But a few, like VI and VIII have 6 or 7 sections. Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks

Not sure why I didn't notice your post earlier.....15m is probably better than 60m though I would recommend using the shorter disclaimer if you decide to go with shorter sections. Hearing the longer disclaimer every 15m would be bothersome to some (me anyway).

Added the subsection titles. May need recapitalization later on - Croly put all of the headings in all caps.

I originally recorded this as one hour long chapter and had to do some cutting at the ends. The three files sound correct to me though. This is the three parts of chapter 1.

1-3
Volumes are high (~96dB) and should be lowered by 6-7dB.
Section 1 has an opening silence longer than the recommended <1s.

Nice reads and an interesting book. The sections you refer in the intro and outro for chapter 1, I'm assuming are "parts" and not the MW section umbers. That the next reading will be chapter 2, section 1,.... (not section 4).

Already looking forward to when this book is finished so I can listen to it without being distracted (PL'ing thoughts).
