Rollo's Wild Oat by Clare Kummer (1886 - 1958).

Rollo Webster, slightly eccentric, has a consuming ambition to play Hamlet. Escaping the restraining influences of his family, he spends his own money in engaging a company, hiring a theater and staging a production of the tragedy. His Ophelia is Goldie MacDuff, who would have been a success in a midnight frolic if she could only keep awake after twelve o’clock. It seems he has everything to finally bring his lifelong ambitions to fruition: a troupe of actors, a gamesome leading lady, a somewhat unscrupulous stage manager, and buckets upon buckets of cash. Now if only he had any talent… ( The Best Plays of 1920-21, with additional material from ChuckW)

Volunteers outside the US: the author died in 1958. Her work is still protected by copyright in some places where copyright is author's death plus 70 years, unless the rule of the shorter term applies. Take a look in the 2nd page of this topic for some discussion of this.

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/rolloswildoatcom00kum
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I wasn't going to launch this for a while, but some folks seems kinda eager to start this a little sooner... so here we are. I promise, I'll go back to doing the sort of weird, depressing plays I'm known for after we're done here. :-)

And in the interest of giving a metatextual dimension to this play about a woefully unprepared buffoon launching a vanity production just so he can wrongheadedly hog the main role all for himself... I'm taking the role of Rollo. :-)

Here's the cast:

Hewston (Rollo’s Man)
Lydia (Rollo’s sister)
Rollo Webster (a youth with aspirations) - I'm taking this one
Mr. Stein (a theatrical manager) - SonoftheExiles expressed interest in this role, so I'm holding it for him
Goldie MacDuff (an actress)
George Lucas (an actor) [yes, that's his real name]
Mrs. Park-Gales (an actress)
Whortley Camperdown (an actor)
Thomas Skittering (an actor)
Aunt Lane (Rollo’s great aunt)
Horatio Webster (Rollo’s grandfather)
Bella (housemaid at the Webster’s)

I was kinda hoping this one would come into fruition. I think I'll choose to play George Lucas. Not because of the name, but because he's probably the only young male role left.

Would you rather do Rollo? I'm not married to the role and honestly didn't consider I was selfishly taking one of the few young male roles in this play. Anyway, thanks for helping out. Glad to see folks are excited about this project.

Nooooo, I wasn't implying I wanted Rollo. :P I love the metatextual fun that comes from you playing him! George will suit me fine.

Haha. I'm not sure if I should take that as a compliment. :-P I think I'm secretly trying to weasel my way out of reading for that character. LOL.

Thanks for helping out, Tomas!

So I accidentally requested too many sections for the MW. Am I able to delete the extra ones myself or do I need you to do that for me?

EDIT: By the way, I can also act as the DPL for individual files, if necessary. I'm perfectly fine with doing that particular duty myself. :-)

At the risk of the improper use of a transitive verb ... "Hey, Rollo, let's do lunch, guy!"

Please sign me up for Mr Stein, Theatrical Manager.

Cheers,

While you can add lines to the MW yourself, you can't delete them. You'll have to invent more characters to fill them all up! Just hand over some more money to Mr Stein...

Ah, since I are one (old grandfather) I think Horatio Webster would be a great little part to have.....
