The Future of the Women's Movement by Helena Swanwick (1864 - 1939).

This project is now complete. All files can be downloaded from the catalog page:
https://librivox.org/future-womens-movement-by-helena-swanwick/

From the Introduction: "There may seem to be a disappointing lack of prophesy in a book avowedly dealing with the future; but since I believe the women’s movement to be a seeking for knowledge and good, to show what is reasonable and good in the movement is to show what will persist and triumph. Through all our faults and mistakes, we women are aiming at better understanding and co-operation with men, and a better adaptation to one another of conditions and persons. We are having to hammer out for ourselves the right principles of government. We can take them ready-made from no man. Doubtless we shall flounder considerably, as men have done—and do. But there is little fear that in the long-run the best minds of men and women will not have a common principle." ( )
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/56403
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Ha! I was browsing through this yesterday, thinking what a great LV project it would make!
So, I'd be glad to serve as DPL.

All set, thanks for taking this on!

I don't have much time, but I'd like to contribute by reading the preface (or: preface and introduction if you put it into one section).

Thank you! :D
Cheers, Ava.

MW is filled in, and we have our DPL. I think we're ready for Readers Wanted.

(I have one extra section, sorry.)

Very interesting! I'll read Chapter 13 for you - do you want the sub-headings of each chapter to be read? I'm not convinced it is helpful in an audiobook, but I'll read them if you like.

I've never even heard of this book, but it's a gem.

May I read Chapter 7 THE ECONOMIC PROBLEM: (1) THE WAGE-EARNER?

I'm sorry to say, no matter how far we've come, this chapter represents problems that are still applicable today, worldwide. I haven't read anything else yet, but I assume the other chapters deal with timely issues as well. As an economist and political scientist, this topic especially wakes my interest. I also like how the chapter starts with a quote from "The Taming of the Shrew".

Thank you both! I have those assigned to you. Yes, please do read the subheadings. I like the idea of having a kind of preview of the ideas the chapter will present.

I agree, TJ. It's a little scary how much of what she says is relatable to the women of today. I've only read a couple of chapters myself, and I'm enjoying this so far.

Here is Chapter 13 of this very interesting book! I was rather shocked that the definition of "spinster" was "woman over 20!" I also find it very interesting to note that she talks about women's lives and contributions "after the babies have stopped coming" - I sometimes forget how much of a difference contraception has made to women's choices in life!

In Asia, the "marry by" age is around 30; for men and women. At least this is taking into account that many people do get a university education these days.

And in Japan, as a married woman, better not think about keeping your job, lest having a carreer - that's your husband's job. Your job is to have babies (NOW!!) and make sure they spend their first 20 years or so in the best possible kindergarden - schools - universities you can get them into. Wouldn't want them to have a substandard education, would you?

Some things have changed. Others have not, or at least: not for the better...
Cheers, Ava.
