Chronicles of America Volume 01: The Red Man's Continent by Ellsworth Huntington.

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-red-mans-continent-by-ellsworth-huntington/
Characteristics of the peoples and environment of the earliest stages of America
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/chroniclesofam01john
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    Magic Window:

    • Say:

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Chapter [number] of The Red Man's Continent by Ellsworth Huntington. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Only if applicable, say:

This is set up. I wonder what happened to the formatting at the beginning of your post. :hmm:

EDIT: I just saw that someone else is soloing this first volume, although he hasn't posted anything yet. viewtopic.php?f=28&t=67311 Did you still want to do this first volume?

If it wouldn't be too selfish and egocentric and all those other bad things, yes, I would like to do the first. And thanks for the help with the set-up. Jim

No problem! And we don't even know if Drew will continue on with his version, and even if he does, we're about "choice of voice" anyway. :)

I need to get my numbers straight. I changed the Volume number in the heading to 01 because it is the first of 48. Is that right? And I noticed that the file id designates a double asterisk, but there are only 5 chapters. Is that because I should anticipate dividing some of the chapters and that eventually we will have double digits? Thanks, Jim

I put the 01 series number in the database entry already, so that's taken care of.

You can put either one or two digits in the file names. The template defaults to 2 and doesn't change when you say it's going to be less than 10. :) The validator (cataloging system) will either add a 0 or take it away - I can't remember what it does at the moment - so as long as you're consistent with naming them either all with 1 or 2 digits, the system will take care of the rest. ;)

Thanks for clarifying. Another question I have is do you want me to do the prefaces. I had decided not to, but I haven't heard the official word, although you did set up for chapters only, so that may be the answer to my question. Thanks again and again, Jim

I didn't look at the text, so I didn't know there were prefaces. You as BC/soloist can choose whether or not to do prefaces or appendices (or footnotes). So if you chose not to do them, you don't have to do them. ;)
