Obviously, I'm not a student of Anglo-Saxon texts. But, I sometimes play one on LibriVox!

Section 5:
22:13

I found the bit at about 6:04-6:45 to be eerily accurate as to the current American temperament. Also, I had no idea that rubber-neck was this old.
And, oh hey, check out my blooper: https://librivox.org/uploads/bloopers/r ... looper.mp3

Yes. Mencken certainly had as a good nose as anybody for wild vagaries. Have you come across his coverage of the Scopes trial?mightyfelix wrote:Section 5:

Oh, and PL OK.
Best,
Barbara
Section 40 is PL OK.wildlindajohnson wrote:Here are Sections 40 and 41:

Spelling reform is sensible.
But ....we'd all have to pronounce the words according to the new orthography, wouldn't we? And somewhere in this text Mencken has remarked that Americans, at least of his time, pronounced words more carefully and distinctly that British speakers. Some of the American reforms reflect this - "thoro" is one . But British English and its derivatives revel in schwas .
Such spelling reforms would be particularly hard on Nuh Zilanders and Sarf Efrikens.
Best,
Barbara
I understood every word. It is PL OK but...mightyfelix wrote:Section 34: The Double Negative

There is a PL note for Philip who seems to have entered the M:S wrongly as 8:46 instead of the 8:23 which Devorah correctly gives. I don't know if this slip deserves a PL note. I mention it in case it saves Philip some trouble in the long run.
Best,
Barbara
Great, Linda. PL OK.wildlindajohnson wrote:Here's Section 39:

Barbara, and I still don't know how to spell judgment/judgement.
Linda, Section 41 would have been PL OK (not least for the French pronunciations) except it's just that bit too loud for a group read. mp3Gain suggests de-amplifying it by -1.6dB.
mp3Gain is the Linux version I'm using, the Windows and Mac versions have similar names.
Best,
Barbara
