Selected Poems of Yone Noguchi by Yone Noguchi (1875 - 1947).

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project: https://librivox.org/selected-poems-of-yone-noguchi-by-yone-noguchi/
"Yone Noguchi was an influential Japanese writer of poetry, fiction, essays, and literary criticism in both English and Japanese. Critical evaluations of Noguchi, while varying drastically, have frequently stressed the enigmatic character of his work. Arthur Symons referred to him as a "scarcely to be apprehended personality." Arthur Ransome called him "a poet whose poems are so separate that a hundred of them do not suffice for his expression." Ezra Pound, on first reading The Pilgrimage in 1911 wrote that "His poems seem to be rather beautiful. I don't quite know what to think about them." Nishiwaki Junzaburō wrote, "Most of his earlier poems have always seemed to me so terrific, so bewildering, as to startle me out of reason or system." ( Wikipedia)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/selectedpoemsofy00nogurich
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): special

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

For future MC:

This will be a Solo Duet done by myself and Eva Davis (bluechien).

Each of us will be reading some sections separately and some together. I will fill in the MW once we decide on exactly who is doing what!

Please provide access to the MW for both of us. We do not have a DPL as of yet.

I am using the standard LV disclaimer for the 1st section, and then the abbreviated Poetry disclaimer for all subsequent sections.

For future DPL:

PL for this is "Special" ... what we like to call the "Poetry DPL" :D

Please read along with the text, but we are not looking for word perfect. If there are minor things that do not change the meaning or rhythm of the poem, then that is OK, but otherwise please note it as well as pronunciation. We will probably finish in 6 months, so no worries about keeping up with the recordings!

Thanks!

Hi Nemo and Eva :) should we be doing this voyage together ? I feel, with my World Story series, in some way I am responsible for your kindled interest in Japan

I can also be DPL for this. I love poetry and the Japanese poetry is something I am not that familiar with.

I'll get us a MW.

ok you got your MW. I'm getting better at this, only 4 minutes it took me :D

You should both have access now as I put you in as BC and Alt-BC, please try it out whether it works.

I wait till you get up, then I move us to Going Solo.

Looking forward to this cooperation :9:

ah the prologue is ready, great start into the collection, Nemo. It was interesting to listen to the difference between western and eastern poets. Although I am not quite sure that the average Japanese would speak in poetry like the author wants us to believe. Maybe that's a bit of a romantic conception he has of his fellow countrymen. He seems to have characterized Wordsworth's poetry quite accurately though.

I enjoyed the listen, your voice was so very level and calm, it was really like balsam to let it trickle in my ear. :9:

Only found one significant error:

> at 8:55: (p. xiv middle) “from the evanescence of psychical life” – you say physical, which has rather the opposite meaning

sorry for running late, Nemo. Beautiful poems, but quite hermetic in their meaning. Lots of food for thought and open for interpretation, I like that. :9:

Sections 1 & 3 PL ok
