A Second Rubaiyat Miscellany.

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here: https://librivox.org/a-second-rubaiyat-miscellany-by-various/

The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam has attracted the attention not only of translators but also of many commentators.

This collection contains assorted articles and translations which were published between 1840 and 1907.

In 1840 Louisa Stuart Costello published in Fraser’s Magazine an article on classic Persian poetry, which included a section on Omar Khayyam with translations of some verses.

Interest in the poetry of Omar Khayyam received its first major boost in the English speaking world when Edward Fitzgerald published a translation of 75 quatrains in 1859. Fitzgerald’s mentor was Professor Edward Byles Cowell, who, in the previous year, had published an essay entitled “Omar Khayyam, the astronomer-poet of Persia” which included translations of thirty quatrains.
In 1885 Whitley Stokes, a renowned Irish orientalist and linguist, published an English translation of eighteen quatrains in the journal 'Academy', nr. 663.

In the National Review, December, 1890 Charles J. Pickering published a lengthy essay entitled “Umar of Nishapur”, in which he compared several notable translations including those in English by Fitzgerald and Edward Whinfield and that in German by Von Hammer.

In 1896 Nathan Haskell Dole, acting as editor, published the following tome in two volumes: Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam English, French, German, Italian, and Danish translations comparatively arranged in accordance with the text of Edward Fitzgerald’s version with further selections, notes, biographies, bibliographies and other material. Included in the “further selections” are translations of assorted quatrains by Henry George Keene and Frank Siller.

In 1901 Dole and Belle Walker published two volumes of “Flowers from Persian Poets.” The first volume contains a short article about Omar Khayyam and translations of twenty two quatrains by an unknown translator.

Omar Khayyám: some verses and an introduction by W.E.B. Whittaker & R. Löwenberg, which was published in 1907, contains a short commentary and renderings of fifty-three quatrains by the authors.

This recording is a sequel to A Rubaiyat Miscellany, published by Librivox on 28th November, 2013:

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Well there is now a MW , so you 2 can start , and I'll try and work out what was causing the problem, it was something to do with one of the authors I think.

just fyi with your title - there's nothing wrong with it and it looks good but it will mean the 2 Miscellany projects will not show tohether in a search . Doesn't really matter , it's just something to think about- computers are not real smart about some things :D

Algy dude, I'm impressed. You said recorded, not edited! I'll be listening, but these ain't all gonna happen tonight.

Part 3 is PL OK.

I've marked part 1 because we usually do PL Plus or whatever we're calling it. I'll note two things and leave you to make the call.

-the MW has 'Specimens of Persian Poetry' (the longer piece that this is part of), but I didn't hear that in the intro

-at 00.28 I heard '1857'. When I clicked through to the google scan it said 1840. I know nothing about subsequent reprints or publication as a book, but perhaps there's something from a later publication?

Good morning Algy!

A few notes. Some of the prose ones for section 9 I flagged as I thought you might want to err on the side of caution, but, as with the previous section, I'll leave it up to you.

Section 9, introduction

2.07-2.11. P. 1, penultimate sentence of second paragraph. Extra word: ...neither did he care to move [through] the world through the medium of politics.

5.15-5.19. P. 2, mid-paragraph in penultimate paragraph: God he thought of as one all [heard all one] kindness...

Outro: heard end of section 9

Section 10, quatrains

5.38-5.40. P. 5, stanza 22, extra word: Ah! [My] Heart, my heart...

9.29-9.34. P. 8, stanza 37: Raise up thine [heard thy] head and give one thought again,

12.46-12.49. P. 11, stanza 49: Is it not straightway [heard straightaway] spurned and cast away?

Well I found out what caused the problems with this being entered into the database
W.E.B. whittaker
- a new author without a leading capital . Somewhere it didn't like it and didn't know what to do with it and went into an endless loop.

I have one note for section 2 (Cowell):

41.20-41.23. P. 15 (162), second stanza:
When with a voice for the moment out spake [heard spake out] the cup

Thank you for this. I've been rootling round more recent interpreters of Lucretius, so this unexpectedly converged with my own reading.

Thanks Erin

I will wait until you have completed PLing all sections and upload the corrections in one hit.

I suspect that Cowell would have thought more highly of Omar if the poet had cast his thoughts into a strongly Christian mould.
