The Red Hand by Arthur Machen (1863 - 1947).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-red-hand-by-arthur-machen/
Two London gentlemen ponder the evolution of humankind as they investigate a modern-day murder committed with an ancient tool. ( Wanda White)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/012347736
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    Magic Window:

    BC Admin
  • The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
    START of recording (Intro):
    • "Chapter [number] of The Red Hand. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Say:
"The Red Hand, by Arthur Machen. [Chapter]"

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Chapter [number] of The Red Hand by Arthur Machen. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Only if applicable, say:
      "[Chapter title]"
    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of [Chapter]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of The Red Hand, by Arthur Machen. "

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes.
  • Example filename redhand_##_machen_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. redhand_01_machen_128kb.mp3)

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)

This appears to be PD, but we could be more certain if you use the following version: https://archive.org/details/TheRedHand.
Help us finish:

Celebrated Women Travellers of the Nineteenth Century 4 sections remaining
Legends and Myths of Hawaii 2 sections remaining

I'm not convinced that either of those sources is PD in the US, since there's no date printed on them. There is a scan of a 2013 edition on Google Books that has a big fat copyright notice on it, so I'm wondering if the ones at Adelaide and on Archive are also modern editions.

HOWEVER :D
The story is included in the 1906 edition of House of Souls:
On HathiTrust: https://hdl.handle.net/2027/uiug.30112000705902
Same book on Archive: https://archive.org/details/houseofsouls00machuoft
This edition is definitely public domain in the US.

I'll use this version:

On HathiTrust: https://hdl.handle.net/2027/uiug.30112000705902

Is that ok with everyone?

Thanks!

You'll probably need a US PLer but that shouldn't be a problem . Because he died in 1947 , the life plus 70 years copyright countries can't see it till next year :D

I'll MC this. Yes, the Hathi text is OK to use.

Be back in a bit with the MW. :)

OK, you're set up.

You were already in the BC list. Have you accessed a MW before? Let me know if you need help with that.

Yes, not been a month yet. Started recording in our new house and ended up having to rearrange three rooms' furniture to get rid of noise and echo. Commandeered part of my husband's closet and added velvety curtains. I've also prepared the text from the new source into a useable format, fixed the typos, etc. Ready to record for real now!

Thanks for checking in,
Wanda

OK, stupid question alert. I am exporting my first solo file. What "value" do I enter for the tags?

They are artist, track title, album title, track number, year, genre, and comments.
There are chapter titles in The Red Hand, if that makes a difference.

Thanks!

Ignore the tags. The ones we need are automatically added in at cataloging time from the chapter titles in the magic window. :)

Looks like you don't have chapter titles in the MW yet. Need instruction on how to enter them?
