Thank you Margot.
The 10s silence is now okay at 5s.

Nice to see this project moving on.

Here's the revised 14, 51:13! Can't believe I neglected to mention poor old Capt Courtney!

Question:
Hi Kim,
I am wondering if librivox.org has a policy on
reading material that we now consider to be
racist... and very politically incorrect. Should we
omit those parts, or just carry on and read them
because that is the way the book was written
a century or two ago?
I am somewhat divided on this myself, for I
think people should be able to see, or hear, how
our thinking has evolved over time. I don't think
we should pretty it up and leave our listeners in
some kind of la la land where they never have to think
about real issues. On the other hand, I don't like
reading it and having my voice out there saying
hurtful things about people.
Specifically, I am wondering about what to do
with Woodes Rogers' description of the Hottentots
in Section 20 of A Cruising Voyage Around the World.
It's a sentence that easily can be omitted, but do we
want to omit it?
Tough issue, I know. Thanks.

Librivox fortunately does have a policy on this. We read the material as is. Fortunately in this case it is just one line. I had 2nd thoughts about another project because of the negativity of the writing, but it is very interesting as it talks about a time and place in history.

Thank you, Kim. I agree with that policy, even though it does cause a bit of discomfort at times. If you start editing material out, where to you draw the line? And who decides to draw the line?
