Children's Short Works Collection Vol. 025.

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/childrens-short-works-vol-025-by-various/
Librivox's Children's Short Works Collection 025: a collection of 15 short works for children in the public domain read by a variety of Librivox members.
NEW READERS: Please read the Newbie Guide to Recording and do a short test recording before submitting here, just to make sure that all your settings are OK. Then please read this post carefully and refer back to it. It has all the information you need to submit a recording successfully.

This collection is for any children's short work in the English Language in the public domain, preferably less than 60 minutes. You are welcome to contribute as many as you wish, and there is no need to "sign-up" before recording as long as the work is clearly in the public domain. Please post here if you are unsure about public domain status.
Please submit poetry to: LibriVox Short Poetry Collection

Where can I find short works for children?
Try http://www.gutenberg.org/
http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/loccs/pz
or any other place you can find some - but they must be Public Domain - many children's things on the internet are not.

Multiple versions are always welcome, so you can record a story that has been recorded before. (If the same stories are submitted twice in the same collection, we will carry the second version over to the next collection) .

You may prefer to submit your recording to one of the other more specialised short story collections.

After 15 recordings are submitted, we will prooflisten, catalog and make them available to the public.

1. RECORD
  • Be sure to set your recording software to: 44100Hz, 16-bit
  • At the BEGINNING Say: "[Title of Work], by [Author Name]" "This is a Librivox recording. All Librivox Recordings are in the public domain. For more information or to volunteer, please visit Librivox.org"
  • At the END, say: "End of [Title], by [Author Name]"
  • If you wish, you may also say: "Read by...your name."
  • Please leave 5 seconds of silence at the end of your recording or 10 seconds if longer than 30 minutes.
2. EDIT and SAVE your file:
  • Need noise-cleaning?Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear distracting background noise, you may want to clean it up a bit. The free version 2.1.1. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide. Note: Noisecleaning with earlier versions of Audacity is not recommended.

  • ID3 Tags:ID tags are no longer needed - they are now produced automatically.

  • Save or export your recording to an mp3 file at 128kbps using the following filename:
    • File Name: Put file name all in lowercase, and the title all in one word (no leading articles i.e. the, a, an, and NO SPACES): csw025_shorttitleinoneword_readersinitials_128kb.mp3,
      e.g. csw025_scarletgiantbean_ge_128kb.mp3
3. SUBMIT your recording:
Please upload your finished recording using the LibriVox uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please copy to post in this thread):
Uploader: http://librivox.org/login/uploader
Image

If you have trouble reading the image above, please send a private message to any admin
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: m8b1.
*If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

4. POST the following information in this thread:
  • • The link you copied from the uploader to your file
    • Name of your story
    • Author (birth year - death year)
    • Translator if applicable (birth year - death year)
    • Source from which you read (i.e. Gutenberg etext url)
    • Length in minutes and size in MB of your file
    • If this is your first Librivox recording, I will also need your name as you would like it to appear on the catalogue page and the URL of your homepage if you have one and would like it linked to your name on the catalogue page.

Want to see if what you plan to record has been done already?
http://librivox.org/newcatalog/search.php?
Search by keywords in the Catalog Search
But don't let this stop you from recording your own version!

Please don't download files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hello,
I love the thought of doing an audio for a children's story. :)
I will find one and get it posted as quickly as I can.

Hi April6090,

I don't think that this story was originally written for children. When I was looking for the text, I found it on PG in a book of essays. It is a fun story, but I think the Short Story collection would be more appropriate. You can find the ongoing collection here: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=66953

Thanks!
Maria

I am sorry, I did think it was a story for children. I have just looked and found "The Happy Prince." That is from a Guttenberg link and the author is Oscar Wilde.

No problem, April! I can see why you thought that. I asked the other admins for a second opinion, and they agreed that it was written for adults.

The Happy Prince is fine for this collection! :-)

Maria,
I just read the Happy Prince & the prince is not so happy after all, so I will choose a happier story.

Maria,
The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher is the story I found on Guttenberg and I am curious as to what age children " Children's Short Work Collection, vol. 025" is geared towards? The story I mention is a small one with less than 1000 words and I would guess the age for this story would be from 2-6 years. Please let me know?
Thank you,
April

Hi April,

As long as it was originally written for children, it would be good to go! As for an age range, hmm, I don't know if there has ever been a definite one. Definitely no cut off on the younger end... 0 to ??

Perhaps if there was something geared towards the mid to upper teens we might look at it more closely, and perhaps recommend the regular short works collection. I would have to ask the other admins their opinion for a definite answer!

"The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher" would be happily accepted! :-)

Thank you for the reply. It is from Guttenberg. I believe it was originally written for children. I do not know the regular short works collection.
If you could attach that link to your reply to this I would appreciate that. Perhaps I will find something there.
Thank you,
April

Thank you, April! It is PL OK!

I was looking all over the Short Works sub-forum for the current Short Stories collection, and I couldn't find it! I was starting to think there wasn't one currently running, when I finally found it in the launch pad! Here it is: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=68067

Hi!

Lynnet asked me to post "Hans in Luck" here from the Tales of Laughter by Smith and Wiggin where it was double recorded by myself as it was orphaned and the originally assigned reader.

https://librivox.org/uploads/m8b1/csw025_hansinluck_ln_128kb.mp3

I just realized after I uploaded it I need to change the intro and closing! I will do that and then re-upload it - sorry about that - I did rename the file so I was half way there :)

Is there anything else I need to do while I am re-recording the intro and closing?
