Jorwat, thank you for the tip on what the abbreviation for "instant" meant. Also I watched a couple Audacity tutorials for replay gain - handy little tool - and I can now make this a regular part of my editing. Here's the corrected files:

I'm just finishing up with the last chapters on my current claim.

May I claim Chapters 16 through 25?

Hi Sylvia,

Thank you for correcting the previous recordings, and for providing the new ones. However, I can't mark any of them PL OK, as they're all about 86 dB, when they should be 89 dB. As such, they're just a little too quiet. You need to amplify them all by 3 dB.

Thank you jordan!

Sylvia, did you use replay gain http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Measuring_Volume_within_Audacity
I think this might make it easier :) thank you!

After Jorwat mentioned it the first time, I watched several Audacity tutorials on replay gain, and I thought I had done it right when I resubmitted them; but obviously, I screwed it up, and I don't know what I was doing wrong.

I have "analyze" in the drop-down menu of the replay gain app, and I was using that. I can think of several steps in the process where I might've gone wrong.

Anyway, here's everything again, hopefully they are okay this time. I did have a particular problem, though with Ch 17, as replay gain seemed to normalize only a part of the file at a time. I don't know. It was confusing when it shouldn't have been. :hmm:

thank you sylvia!

are you using replaygain or mp3gain? the names are similar but those are two different things. there is replaygain which is a plugin to audacity. when you add it, a new item appears in the drop down menu of "effects" in audacity, and when you click it snd just hit ok, the track is set to 89 decibel. at least thats how it works for me.

I'm using replay gain. It was already in the list of effects when I downloaded the whole Audacity software.

It is not the same as yours in that when I hit OK it does not automatically set for 89 db.
I finally figured out that the 89db is set in one of the menu items in the bars above the audio line. It was set incorrectly at something lower than 89.

So that meant that when I used replay gain "analyze", it would give me a number like 3.0 to manually enter the needed db's to the audio when I then used "normalize". One of the problems I had is I did not realize that the drop down menu in replay gain did not default back to normalize. Thru not paying close attention I thought it was correcting/normalizing when it was really just analyzing again and not amplifying to 89.

Anyway, I now have the setting for recording @ 89db (that's the one above the audio line), and I have a better understanding of how replay gain works. I've done several test audio lines to see if it's working, and right now I'm satisfied that whatever I produce next will be in the right volume range.

It's kind of strange that this just suddenly started happening when so many sections I've produced in the past passed muster. I must've done something to change the 89db setting without realizing it. Thank goodness for the LV volunteers who produce the very informative videos that helped me out.

Very anxious to have this frustration behind me. Thank you Carolin and Jorwat for your patience.

Hi Sylvia,

The volumes are all fine now.

However, I do have some notes for the new recordings:

16: The ending silence is too short. It should be about 5 seconds, and you're at about 2.5

17:

8:31: 'What was the end' should be 'Was that the end'

Ch 17 Time 12:33

And a new section that should have all the volume settings in the right place again.
