An Exchange of Souls by Barry Pain (1864 - 1928).

This project is now in the catalogue. All audio files can be found on our catalogue page:
http://librivox.org/an-exchange-of-souls-by-barry-pain/

Although only lightly known as an author of horror stories, Barry Pain departs from his typical themes with 'An Exchange of Souls'. In this novel, respected doctor Daniel Myas is a scientist who has developed a machine which allows for the exchange of his 'personality' with that of another. However when his attempt at 'exchanging souls' occurs with an individual very close to him, only a form of horror can be the result, and the reader is led down a path of deterioration and fear. Undoubtedly this novel, published in 1911, influenced H.P. Lovecraft’s tale of personality exchange in 'The Thing on the Doorstep', published in 1937. Pain's development of the theme of immortality by use of scientific methods proves quite difficult, and at the same time quite intriguing. What are the potential results when 'souls' are exchanged, particularly with those of the opposite sex? (Roger Melin)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Ok, MW is ready and I'll move us to Going Solo as we're fully staffed.

Let me know if I've missed anything.

Have fun!

This promises to be a good book, I hope I can do it some justice. Hopefully I'll have the first chapter ready in a few days.

ah I was looking forward to the start, Roger !! Excellently read again, as expected :D And the story itself promises to be very cool indeed. A protagonist being interested in what happens at the moment of death and, judging by the title, about the soul in particular, I would say. Ooooh, things probably better left undiscovered :help:

I was enjoying the first chapter :9: and looking forward to the next.

Oh and my absolute favourite sentence was: "somebody with a name like a tropical disease" would have loved to hear the name in question

Well done and PL ok

Yeah, I also liked the description of the cellist.

If you're still looking forward to the next chapter, you need wait no longer.

Chapter 2 has been posted. Enjoy!

Thanks! :D

 wow ! the topics of the dialogue in this chapter was difficult to grasp. This is becoming highly metaphysical. Quite interesting though, even if I don't follow all the reasoning. I'm curious to know more about where this all is going...

Found two small errors this time:

> at 6:54: "all of which is abominably dull talk after luncheon" (p. 21 bottom) - I hear "abnominally", which is not a word, I think :hmm:

> at 10:11: "from its usual concomitants of mind and body" (p. 24 bottom) - you say "non-comitants"

The rest, perfect as always. :)

thanks Roger, another great chapter in the box. :)

I only have one tiny note and I'm not even sure whether I heard correctly:

> at 2:00: “the characteristic spes phthisica” – I’m sorry, but I hear “titica” instead of “tisica”. I find it so cool and laudable that you went to the trouble to find the right pronunciation of the initial letter combination, that it would be a pity to now make the error in another part of the word ;)

Apart from that, entirely flawless chapter. And highly interesting as to reveal a bit more of the character of the narrator. I first thought he would become an unconditional friend of Myas but it seems he is much more sceptical of his work and doesn’t like his personality at all.

Great job again !

Well, doesn't that just figure! The one term that I needed to work on, and even practiced. Sheesh!

Thanks Sonia. Chapter 3 has been patched and uploaded, and hopefully it came out better this time.
