Bullets & Billets by Bruce Bairnsfather (1887 - 1959).

This project is complete! All audio files are available on our catalog page:
https://librivox.org/bullets-billets-by-bruce-bairnsfather/

A front line view of life in the trenches of the Western Front in the early part of 1914-1915. Told by Lieutenant (later Captain) Bruce Bairnsfather, cartoonist, whose Alf, Bert, and Old Bill, were forerunners to Bill Mauldin and his Willie and Joe in World War 2. This volume traces Bairnsfather's service as a Machine Gun officer from its inception until he was removed from the battlefield by the intense shelling during the Second Battle of Ypres (April 1915). It is told with a wry, ironic, grim humor often possessed by those who have endured shells, bullets, floods, mud, bully beef, maconochie, and a surfeit of plum and apple jam. His participation in the unofficial Christmas Truce of 1914 (for which he was investigated in view of a court-martial) is documented as well as the horrors of war at close quarters. (Dr. P. Gould)
Volunteers outside the USA: Bruce Bairnsfather died in 1959. His work is still protected by copyright in places like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years, and Australia (author's death plus 70 years for authors who died after 1954).
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/11232
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Note to prospective MCs/DPLs. It will be about a week to 10 days (around Sep 7) before I can begin reading for this project. I am recovering from a laryngeal inflammation. But I look forward to completing this project during the 103d anniversary of the beginning of Capt. Bairnsfather's World War I service.

I appreciate your help with this project.

Many thanks,

Philip

Thank you Laurie Anne! I'll have it filled out this afternoon and start "marking up" the text before I read it.

Many thanks,

Dave and Laurie Ann:

I have posted Section 0 in the magic window. My intention is to post up to 3 sections per week until we're done. They've identified the irritant which caused my laryngeal inflammation (a miniscule gas leak in my furnace--which has been repaired. Thankfully, we don't use furnaces in the summertime.) so I should have no further problems.

Thanks for bearing with me.

Oh goodness -- I'm glad the gas leak didn't cause anything worse than a sore throat!

Dave:

Chapter 2 is in the MW, ready for PL. I'm glad these are relatively short chapters. Gives me a chance to get my voice back in shape.

Many thanks,

Philip
