[COMPLETE] The Pig Brother and other Fables and Stories-philc
Phil - I just noticed the filename for section 8 is missing the "_128kb" near the end. I added a note to the Magic Window to remind you to fix that before the book rolls out. We're down to three unread sections. Huzzah!

Thanks Rich.
I'd written down the intro instructions and thought it was a bit repetitive with the title being said twice. May be I misunderstood. O did I do it three times? Whoops!

If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
Say:
"The Pig Brother, and Other Fables and Stories, by Laura E. Richards. [Name of the Story]"

Section 21 (but it's currently listed as 14 in the Magic Window) - "At the Little Boy's Home" - I'd like to see some fixes.
Your background noise is worse than in "The Wheat Field" - I'm hearing what I think is your computer fan - are your computer and mic sitting on the same table? The computer can shake the desktop and that can shake the mic if they are all touching. Fortunately, you can do a bit of processing to make the recording quite a bit cleaner.
I opened your section in Audacity and ran the high pass filter (frequency = 20.0, rolloff = 6dB/octave) to reduce the DC offset and low frequency stuff.
I then ran a notch filter (frequency = 60.0, Q = 10).
There was still a spike of noise at 120 Hz (two times North American AC frequency) so I ran the notch filter once more (frequency = 60.0, Q = 10).
I saved this as a new .mp3 and switched back and forth listening to the original and my version. With headphones at a loud-but-not-uncomfortable volume I could hear low rumbly-grumbly noise between words in the original vs. quite a bit less of that in my edited version.
Can you please run the fixes I've suggested and upload the section again (perhaps after the chapter numbering in the Magic Window is restored)? Your reading itself is just fine and will be an easy PL OK after you've cleaned up the noise a bit. Thanks!
By the way, "Checker" reports the overall section volume as 90.2 dB in your original and 89.7 dB after the rumbles are removed. Both of those numbers are near the center of the LibriVox acceptable range.

I'll be home soon and will check on it then.lynies wrote:

Well - <sigh> - there's not much difference between this one and the version you uploaded before.lynies wrote:

If it's OK with you and if it's OK with Phil I can send a version of your recording with some extra noise reduction. According to Checker I've managed to reduce the hum/noise by 10 dB without (in my opinion) affecting the way your voice sounds.
Otherwise I can OK your current upload. There's hum in there, but that doesn't interfere with the intelligibility of the section.
Opinions please.

EDIT: OK, there is a hum but I would give this a PL OK since it is definitely intelligible. I'll make a video for her to show noise reuction or what I would do with this type of little problem. If she wants one of course!
EDIT2: Here is the video, comin at ya https://youtu.be/OazIFQjsu7c It is only a few minutes long. (Disclaimer: do not use during thunder storm or while eating corn on the cob).

I've marked section 21 - "At The Little Boy's Home" - PL OK
It's a good reading, and the background noise isn't going to prevent listeners from learning the important lesson in this one - "mind your parents or get dunked" - was that it? Or, was it "choose your excuses carefully"?

Hello,
I apologize about the late response. Librivox has not notified me of a new comment on my thread. I'll have to look more often. College and whatnot has me busy, as well, but I have fixed my readings nonetheless!
