Conversations on the Plurality of Worlds by Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle (1657 - 1757). Translated by William Gardiner (1672 - 1719)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/conversations-on-the-plurality-of-worlds-by-bernard-le-bovier-de-fontenelle/

This is an old abandoned solo, resurrected as a group project. TriciaG is BC.
Warning! The text is old style, with the long S.

The book itself is presented as a series of conversations between a gallant philosopher and a marquise, who walk in the latter's garden at night and gaze at stars. The philosopher explains the heliocentric model and also muses on the possibility of extraterrestrial life. Fontenelle's work was not cast polemically against the world views of either the Catholic Church or the Protestant churches, nor did it attract the attention, positive or negative, of theologians or prelates. ( Wikipedia)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/conversationsonp00font
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):

You have a MW
As a Soloist you are your own BC and need to manage the MW yourself - fill in chapter titles and add your files when they are ready
I've put in some suggestions in the title field

Here is the link to obtain a password and log into Workflow for the first time:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BxWB83bbALTQYjlENGZ0SVJUWWs

And this one is instructions for managing the Magic Window:

See how you go :D

I had a little set back--got sick and lost my voice. But all of my chapters are now recorded and I should finish editing tonight and be ready to upload.

Michele,
You have a lovely reading voice.

To help your PLers please update the status workflow. When you post a link the status dropdown should be changed to "Ready for PL". Once you receive feedback it can then be toggled to "See PL Notes" or "PL ok". Once corrections are made the dropdown should then be changed to "Ready for spotcheck". In addition to the status update please list the file duration in the Notes column. It helps us know how long to set aside for PLing and is a quick double check that none of your files were cut off during the upload processes.

Your file names should end with _128kb. This is a known error in the solo template, we try to catch it during setup but sometimes miss it. You don't need to change any of the file names for the PL ok files already in the system but please add it to the files you haven't yet uploaded.

All that being said...

Sections 0, 1, 3, and 4 are all PL OK!

Section 2
Opening silence is a little long. In general we need a maximum of 1 second. The ending silence on 1 is a little short of the 5 second ending silence so combined I don't think listeners will mind. If you want, mark this section as PL ok and just be more mindful of the silences for future sections.

Section 5
Opening silence is over 1 second, please trim.
Silence between intro and the reading is very long (about 8 seconds) and contains a few mouse clicks. Please trim.

Only general comments I can provide is your volume tends to fluctuate between sections. Our aim is 89dB with an acceptable range of 86-92dB. You are within the range on all sections however your range is 86.2-89dB. With a 3dB range listeners may need to adjust the volume throughout the project. Also, keep watch for page turns. I only picked up on a few of them but for listeners using earphones this could be disturbing.

Overall, a truly excellent job! I hope you have enjoyed the process.

Thanks so much for the review and kind words! I've really been struggling with this project because things have become crazy at work. Will fix sections 2 and 5 and upload remaining sections asap!

Thanks again,
Michele

Hi Michele,
Glad to see you back!

Sections 6, 7, 9, 10, and 11 are all well read and without errors. The opening and ending silences need to be adjusted. Opening silence needs to be less than 1 second. Ending silence needs to be 5 seconds.

Please add the file duration to the notes section of the MW. It helps us ensure your file was not cut off during upload and also helps PLers know how much time to set aside for PLing.

Hi Philip,
I'm not certain if you noticed. The sections in the MW listed as needing PL have all been PLed. The MW is just a bit out of date.
