Gill,

Thanks for 19 and 20; I'll check them later today.

I've replaced "Part One" in the intro with "Volume One" for sections 12-16 and 18. Thanks for spotting that. As I said, there's no need to check them.

By the way, are you male or female? I should use the correct pronoun.

**

Annise,
I did check that the file for section 17 that could be downloaded from the MW was the one where I'd edited Gill's corrections. As there are more waiting for Gill to PL, I thought we could try and find out what's causing the problem after I've edited them.

Gill,
Within the last few months, it was decided to have a standard five seconds of silence at the end (so not 10 seconds for recordings of over 30 minutes). I'm sorry, but I forgot to change this in the first post. I've done that now.

Gill, I've uploaded the edited sections 19-21. Thanks for your PLs.
Peter

***

Section 19

0:05 “Part 1” instead of “Volume 1”
[corrected]

8:51 missing “to sir” in “to Sir G. Grey” bottom of 1st column p112
[replaced phrase]

c13:58 Audible click before section “Of the Diet …” p113
[deamplified by 20dB]

26: 22 halfpenny 1st paragraph p115
[replaced phrase ... I assume that you felt that it should be pronounced "haypnee"?]

30:44 slightly unclear “to be able to remit” p115 2nd column para 3
[Replaced sentence]

39:53 “countrymen” instead of “countrywomen” top of p117
[Corrected]

Note re transliteration "th" in words spoken by Irish 'characters', e.g. in "thrue":
I think this is meant to be a voiced "t", i.e. a "t" with a breath behind it. People from Cork generally don't pronounce a "th" (as in "the" or "think").
I'm not suggesting you re-do these parts (!).
[Thanks; I'll watch out for this in future.]

Section 20

0:06 “Part 1” instead of “Volume 1”
[corrected]

7:17 “21 million…” said instead of “210 million…” p118 para 3 just after the break
[corrected]

9: 28 repeat of “to the vital” p118 2nd column Para 1
[corrected]

10:48 ‘repeat’: “during the during their” p118 2nd column Para 2
[corrected]

23:21 loud-ish breathing noise
[I couldn't hear this, but have deamplified from about 23:20.15-23:20.20 (after "in other words"). If you can still hear the breathing, could you give me the location to the hundredths of a second, please?]

****

Section 21
0:06 Part 1
[corrected to "volume one"]

1:11-1:12 Noise p120
[deleted]

3:37 “smacking” noise after “couldn’t buy game” p121 2nd para, about 2/3 down.
[deleted]

4:15 sort-of repeat of “to” in “used to peer about” p121 near end of 2nd para
[corrected. It was me trying to be precise, separating "used" and "to".]

11:40 “525 thousand” said instead of “524 000” p122 table
[One of Mayhew's errata. Please see my note below at 50:12]

12:20 “total” missing for geese “60,000” p122 table
[corrected]

13:37 Total for Newgate “1,465,000” said instead of 1465 000 p122 table
[One of Mayhew's errata. Please see my note below at 50:12]

23:56 click before “offers them to” P124 para 1 about 2/3 down
[I couldn't hear this, but have removed a couple of fragments. Please check that I've sorted it.]

26:39 “brought” said instead of “bought (the goodwill of a coffee shop)” p124 2nd column line 13
[corrected one word]

28:59: loud breathy noise before pause after “best of all” p124 near end
[deleted]

35:34 missing “told me that” before quote near end of p125
[corrected]

48:42 Noise between page break p129/p130
[I couldn't hear it, but have deamplified the gap by 20dB]

50:12 “166” said instead of “160” list p130 at top of 2nd column (for snipes)
[This is due to one of Mayhew's errata, given in the last pages of the text. I've tried always to mention when I've made these changes. The erratum for snipe total is mentioned in my original post describing the upload (July 20th). So I've left this one unchanged.]

End needs 10 second silence as over 30 minutes total.
[There's been a change in the rules, and we only need 5 seconds.]

Yes, sorry: I didn't finish the note for "halfpenny".

Gill,
Thanks for PLing 22; I'll edit it tomorrow.

***

It's very odd about 20 and 21. I've just downloaded them (R-click on Listen in the MW, choose Save As ...) and they're both dated the 9th August, and both start with "volume 1" in the Intro. What do you get when you do this?

That business of seeing older files has been reported as due to the browser looking in its cache of saved files, rather than downloading new ones, but I don't know how you can demonstrate that that's the cause, or stop it happening. I'm going to put a note in Help Wanted.

***

I found that it would have helped to have known your gender when I was writing that last note to Annise ... so I could say "she or he". Thanks.

***

I can't imagine any of Mayhew's informants talking about "half-pennies", "three pence" or "six pence", so generally I've given them as "haypneez", "thrup'nse" and "sixp'nse" ... and I certainly didn't say them in the full form when I was using pounds, shillings and pence, unless I wanted to make a special emphasis. So I'll often lapse when I'm narrating; I'm sure Mr Mayhew would understand! It's a combination of laziness and verisimilitude.

***

I think "she was training to go into an asylum" must have had a different meaning to the way we interpret it now; it sounded odd to me, too.

PL for Section 23
A lot of this refers to background noises, I'm afraid, some of which are more noticeable than others. (I skipped several smaller ones too.) Maybe I'm being too "sensitive"! Most are between sentences, so it should be easy to edit them out.
P138
7:11-15 some background noises (2nd para 2nd sentence)
7:59 ditto at “going out of fashion” same para
8:42 bump just before beginning of para 3
10:00-10:03 background noises (end of para 3)
10:56 “flock” said instead of “block” 2nd column 1st para

P139
14:18 click “very seldom their coats” p139 para 1
15:04 – 15:05 noises after “cheaper togs” (same para) and 15:20 at “covered in the cart” and 15:45 “pony to keep and everything that way”
16:20 noise at “than I am – lots” p139 para 2
16:57 noise “he said 26” p139 bottom of 1st column
18:43-44 noises at “London Pride 11,520” 2nd list
19:42 click after “grow their own mignonette” p139 2nd column 1st para of new section

25:50 click at “two or three weeks longer” p140 2nd column para 3 and 26:12-13 rustling noise at end of para 3
28:01 noise at “parsley” p141 Column 1 table
32:00 “is” said instead of “it (does not)” 2nd column para 2 halfway
33:42 click at “servants” p142 line 8
35:28 noise at “handy” p142 para 3
37:41-43 rustling noise at “They resorted…” p142 column 2 para 2
50:01 “5,156 China-asters” instead of “9,156” p144 table
50:23 click before the number of poppies in the same list
52:55 rustling at start of “Flowers in Pots” section p144 2nd column

I have noted (also in a part of Section 22) that you sometimes correct Mayhew’s mistakes (e.g. for Cowslips 60 instead of his mistaken 50, and subsequent correction in the total), and as you have mentioned in your note.

Likewise you correct his bad addition in column 2 to 1,883 (not his 1,183) although you do not carry this forward when he computes “add one-half as shown” to which he adds the half of his incorrect total, i.e. 591 (not half of 1,883, i.e. 941); then you give the overall total as your corrected annual total with his incorrect half. [If you're making changes anyway, isn't it better to have 1883 + 591?]

53:29 For FLOWERS IN POTS you correct his Geraniums to 160 but give the same total he did here, but change it in the next part (final list).
53:43 “Flowers in pots” missing in list of street expenditure p144 2nd column last list
53:58 You correctly correct his Flower in pots but give the same total he did. (Should be 50 less, unless I'm missing another error.)

Sorry about all this!

I'm right clicking on the MW to listen. I will try with fresh browsers tomorrow and see if it brings up the correct file.

Thanks, Anne. I'd forgotten about that.

Gill,
With regard to the corrections to Mayhew's numbers, I had thought of making the figures numerically correct, but a) it would involve checking every one of his calculations (including all those "so many at a penny per bunch .... total" 's) and b) I should really give the numbers that he himself gives in the book. It's a difficult area, and I have corrected one or two obviously mistaken totals in the past, treating them as typos, but overall I think I should stick to Mayhew's words. I can put a note in the summary about the figures occasionally not adding up.

And ... have a look in the Help Wanted section; there are some suggestions about your seeing the old sound files rather than the edited ones. It sounds like a Firefox problem ... but I'm using Firefox. Try Anne's solution. Or I could upload them to cloud storage for you.

PL 20 OK
Perfect!
I usually use Google Chrome. I opened it in Explorer and it was the correct file. In fact, it's much easier to manipulate in Explorer, so I'll do that in future.

Re numbers: It's obviously at your discretion. I was just letting you know that some corrected figures had not been 100% carried through. Too much work to check them all for sure!
