Love and a Bottle by George Farquhar (1677 - 1707).

This play was produced in 1698 at Drury Lane Theatre. From the bustle of its plot, the variety of its incidents, and the sustained humour of its dialogue, it met with so favourable a reception that Farquhar henceforth devoted himself to writing for the stage. (Alex. Charles Ewald)
  • This play is complete. Audio files can be found on the catalog page: http://librivox.org/love-and-a-bottle-by-george-farquhar/
What?!? Has it been almost a month without a Farquhar running? Well, I can fix that. Here is the first play by Farquhar. The plot? What plot? A farce as became Farquhar's usual offering and really just an excuse for playful banter and much fun. Several of the characters introduced show up as parts of characters in the later plays we have already recorded.

Gender neutral as always. Kitty is again our wonderful DPL!

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/stream/dramaticworksge00ewalgoog#page/n28/mode/1up
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

for those who are interested, this play was a drama school project and this "hands on method" I found interesting:
We sent one of the students, who plays a beggar, to Finsbury Park station to beg – he wasn’t allowed to come back until he got at least 50p! It took him about three quarters of an hour and he said it was a mortifying experience. But when he came back, he played the scene completely differently
now that's dedication !

You can read about the experience here:

Yes. Welcome.

I see you have done a book chapter reading before. To do a character part in a drama, you create a file for each Act with all the lines complete for the chosen character using the link to the document text given in the first forum posting. As you record, feel free to experiment with different characterizations for each line - happy, sad, surprised, depressed - whatever you think is right for the story. Then edit it down to what you think is the single best reading for each line. Please make sure you leave several seconds between lines because I have to cut the files apart and paste them together again to create the completed play.

Also, at the start of your Act 1 file record a Voice Credit - "Pindress, Attendant and Confidante to Lucinda, read by [whatever you want as your name]".

Read the first posting in the forum for instructions on proper file name and upload instructions, then upload the acts - one file each act. Be sure to post the upload file name link in a message here so that we can get it into the Magic Window and have the files PL'd by our wonderful DPL before I edit.

Thanks, Todd

May I please claim the following sections?

6 (Who wouldn't want to have a name like "Nimblewrist"?)
10, 11, 12, and 13 ("Brush", because of course a servant's name should reflect his duty and choice tool.)
23 (I'll do my best to sound boy-ish... errrrr... as soon as I figure out what that sounds like :hmm: )

Thanks! :D

While for books you can claim multiple chapters, here you pick one character for all the Acts in which they appear. Let me know which character you would like.

(Also, the MWs are often rearranged in Plays as sections are assigned and completed, so use character names, not section numbers, please. Like you did for Nimblewrist and Brush.)

Thanks, Todd
