Carpenter's Geographical Reader: Africa by Frank G. Carpenter (1855 - 1924).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/carpenters-geographical-reader-africa-by-frank-g-carpenter/

Fascinating book for all ages telling of travels through Africa over 100 years ago. Covering the continent by steamer and train and other more primitive means of transport, the reader will enjoy learning of African life long before knowledge of this continent was available to most people throughout the world. ( BettyB)
  1. Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/carpentersgeogr01carpgoog
  2. Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Are we shortening the file name for this one?

I thought to keep them consistent with the others in the series, and use "af" for Africa? But you're an expert on this series by now, so do what you think best . . .

And sorry, I forgot to add you to the MW. That's been changed now.

Yes I just thought that "geographicalreaderaf" would be the standard to keep the pattern. That's why I was surprised to see it so different in the listing.

Well, in all honesty, I edited it without checking the others . . . . . . I guess my memory is not the clearest. Glad you caught that, and use whatever you think is best . . . just not the full "carpentersgeographicalreaderafrica" which the template generator spit out!

Great Betty.

I'm ready for the wilds, as well as for some commentary from the time which is probably not considered respectful today.

You can edit the first post if you would like. Not sure it's necessary for a change in file name on a solo.

I have uploaded a few chapters for PL.

I believe with this book we are going to see a whole new level of inappropriate commentary. wow.

Also, its getting harder to believe that these trips actually happened as I read in a summary of the book that they didn't.
Said the author had travelled somewhat but not necessarily to the places in the book and much of the text was researched from articles of the day.

Great Betty. The preface is PL OK.

The farther we get from North America, the more inappropriate the commentary. Product of the times. Let's pay attention throughout this volume in case we decide it needs a disclaimer in the book summary about reflecting the times in which it was written.
