A Popular History of Astronomy During the Nineteenth Century by Agnes Mary Clerke (1842 - 1907).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/a-popular-history-of-astronomy-during-the-nineteenth-century-by-agnes-mary-clerke/

A Popular History of Astronomy during the Nineteenth Century was thought to be Agnes Mary Clerke's greatest work. It covers developments made in the field of astronomy during the nineteenth century and is still used by scholars today who study the history of astrophysics. The book details the career of William Herschel, covers the discovery and development of spectral analysis and progress made on the understanding on sun spots. Margaret Lindsay Huggins, who wrote Clerke's biography, said of the work, "it deserves to live, and it most assuredly will live" ( MillionMoments)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/28247
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Pronunciation Note: Please pronounce our author's last name as "Clark" to use the English pronunciation of the name. Thanks!

Well, OK, I will assign only two sections to you since you are controlling yourself! Anytime you want more, please feel free to ask! :D Thanks Ava!

Hello,
I'm a new reader. I have completed my 1-minute test and it was ok'd.

I'd like to claim sections 36-40 (the sections for Chapter 12) if that's ok. If so, you can use Bethany Bovard for the catalog.

Here is some astronomy for you. I pronounced Clerke's name Clark as I thought the English would. What's your call?

I happened to just look this up in case I got ok'd for chapter 12. In the encyclopedia, it does mention that it is pronounced "Clark."

Pronouncing Clerke as Clark sounds fine with me! I will put it up at the top, just to let everyone know that is what we are doing. Thanks Jim!

Hi Ann,

I'm not sure if you saw my previous message. Do you have need of more readers for this book? If so, I'd like to claim sections 36-40.

Thanks,
Bethany

PS: I apologize if commenting on the Clerke pronunciation thing was inappropriate. I'm new and I'm still trying to figure out the culture/ communication expectations of this community. :) Thanks again.

Hi,
I'm new and a wild Australian accent appearing might throw off the listeners, but I can do 2-8 if you need me! (is there a deadline once claimed? this is my first time, be gentle :P )
