Nature Myths and Stories for Little Children by Flora J. Cooke .

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/nature-myths-and-stories-for-little-children-by-flora-j-cooke/

Volunteers outside the USA: Flora J. Cooke died in 1953. Her work is still protected by copyright in places, like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years.
Written for first through third graders, this book aims to expand not only the imagination but the vocabulary. For listeners following along with the text, please note the stories are read in order of the categories listed in the table of contents. (Linette Geisel)
  1. Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/30800
  2. Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): special - Please read long with the text. The sections are in the order of the table of contents groups and not in the order of the book printing. I’ve created a google doc based on the section readings in case you would like to use that instead of the PG text. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4bi_D0sUQ5jX1V0emZiVzhaUnc/view?usp=sharing
Please let me know of any mispronunciation or word changes impacting intent.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

  3. The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
    START of recording (Intro):

      "[Preface]"

For the second and all subsequent sections:
    • "Nature Myths and Stories for Little Children by Flora J. Cooke. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
      "[Section title]"
    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of [Section title]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of Nature Myths and Stories for Little Children, by Flora J. Cooke."

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording.

I'm a good week or so away from beginning to read but I was finished with the initial prep so figured I would get it launched.

I won't be in a hurry and it's unlikely I'll get more than 1 section a week up. Sections range from 462 - 3071 words.

Linny,
I'd be happy to MC this for you. Do you have a PLer lined up? If not, we'll add the ~ to the thread title.

That's wonderful! Thank you, Nemo. :9:

I see MaryAnn, that you already removed the ~ and moved us to Solo. Excellent, thank you. I love being away from the launch pad fish bowl.

Nemo,
The good news is all my prep for this is finished and I've caught up my other projects. The bad news is we have had thunderstorms for the last couple of days and the 10 day forecast is calling for them throughout. It's not something I can noise clean out so I'll do what I can as soon as I can. Sorry for the delay.

Hello Nemo,
Preface is up. Don't worry if you don't get to it for a few days or weeks. My sister is arriving tonight for a week so it's doubtful I'll get more finished this week.

I do want to ask your opinion, if you have the time and inclination. I posted a discussion about being able to read this project in order of the table of contents instead of in order of the print. Anne voiced concern since listeners at this level of story sometimes follow along as I read. How do you feel about adding the page numbers to the stories? Tricia didn't think so but Anne never replied. I'm still sort of torn on this topic. Anne filters through complaints posted about recordings and I certainly don't want to add one however if the listener is reading along then they have access to the table of contents. Hey Linny!

How are the storms? .... died down for now?

I will PL this tonight (along with four other sections I have on my plate) :)

Here are my thoughts:

I think it is just fine reading in order of ToC since both the publisher listed them that way and for the listener who may want to be able to listen to a certain kind of story, it helps them find it easier. I've listened to a "few" audio books and not once did I read along with the text ... kind of defeats the purpose in my opinion. I also raised three kids and read books to them every night and that almost always entailed just one story or chapter before the kid falls off to sleep (or Dad wants them to go to sleep!), so this format works fine for that as well.

I would agree with Tricia in not adding the page numbers to the stories.

My philosophy is more of: think about it, get input, make a decision and then just do it .... which is what you have done here. Go with your instinct and just do it! ..... I love that you foster all others opinions, but in the end, it's your project. If we get some complaints on how it was structured, then we can take that as a learning experience for the next time!

Sounds good. At some point I'll update the summary to reflect.

Reading along with text at this level is generally for those learning to read English.

We are back to our normal thunderstorms during the afternoons. I enjoy those and they are much easier to schedule around. I'm so glad the whole day ones have passed on.

Enjoy your evening!

Hi Linny,

PL notes for the preface:

First, just let me say that your reading was very nice. Your inflection at certain times was very powerful in getting across the point being made and I found myself very interested in what was being said!

Two places where you substituted a word that changes the meaning:

At a time of 0:44, the text reads: “are practically helpless without the use of a printing press” and I heard you read: “are particularly helpless without the use of a printing press”

At a time of 1:16, the text reads: “If the trees and the flowers,” and I heard you read “In the trees and the flowers,”

Other than that, it was very well done!

Hi MaryAnn and Nemo,
This is my 1 month check in to let you know I'm still here and utterly embassesed I haven't made progress this month. I really expected more free time to record. I'm heading out to visit family and won't be able to attempt more recording until I return.

How is it that time off from school has left me with less free time?

This project makes me feel so guilty. If I can't make progress in the 2 weeks then I think I should open it as a group project. :(
