Hawaiian Sea Hunt by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Adams_(pseudonym) (1859 - 1935).

This exciting book is now in our catalog at https://librivox.org/hawaiian-sea-hunt-mystery-by-andy-adams/
Adventure series in exotic locations. ( Peter Thomlinson) This adventure is set in the exotic Island of Hawaii and involves the search for a missing sloop and the whereabouts of a valuable mine. Biff Brewster, his father and friends become entangled with ruthless criminals who are also intending to find the sunken boat and discover the map and the mine. They have kidnapped the elderly scientist who holds the key to the discovery. An exciting adventure with lots of action on land and sea.
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/files/51755/51755-h/51755-h.htm
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi Peter,

I'd be happy to DPL this one for you, if you'd like. This was one of the juvenile series I enjoyed as a boy. :)

Thank you,
Don

Many thanks - that will be wonderful.

I hope to record in a relaxed manner, due to it being summer, so probably 3 chapters a week, but you never know, once I get going I might set a faster pace. Hope that's OK with you.

Whoops, I just noticed that even thought this book is in Gutenberg, there is a copyright claim from the publisher dated 1960
© GROSSET & DUNLAP, INC., 1960
on the title page and it says all rights reserved.

Perhaps we need to check this out before proceeding unless you have other information.

The other two I've already finished were OK and they said the same thing on the title pages.

Hi Phil,

I believe I can assist here. Not only was the book published in 1960, but was also copyrighted in 1960. But that's OK; it is still PD according to U.S. copyright terms. According to PG, the book is Public Domain in the U.S. (see the Bibrec tab at the PG link). PG cleared the book under Rule 6: Failure of U.S. Works to Comply With Renewal Requirements Prior to 1964.*

PG's Rule 6 falls under that part of the copyright regs which apply to "Works Registered or First Published in the U.S.," between 1923 and 1963 inclusive, where the work was originally registered, but the registration was not renewed with the Copyright Office as required by the regs in force during that time. Such works become public domain for the failure to renew.

PG requires additional research for such clearance requests (in addition to the basic clearance information and images of the TP&V), before they will review and accept/reject a clearance request. Note, I'm not a copyright lawyer or expert, but have obtained Rule 6 clearances from PG in the past and am familiar with the process.

So, if PG says it PD, IMO it should be fine (of course final word comes from the LV admins :) ).

Don

* Since the project was processed through Distributed Proofreaders, and as an admin there, I was able to confirm the clearance rule which applied from PG.

wow Don, that is great to hear. It is always nice to hear from the amazing people who do DP - I stand in awe of their abilities. (I tried it, couldn't do it!). We will move right ahead and thanks again for clarifying those murky rules. Image

Phil - shouldn't the "status" column in the MW read differently, and the "Reader" column show me as doing a solo recording? Or have I got that wrong? Do I need to change this myself? (Also the assigned bit in the very beginning).

I'm about to start recording but thought I should mention this first.

Hi Peter. I made the status 'Fully Subscribed' because you will be taking all the sections. As soloist you will be maintaining the magic window and can put yourself as reader for all sections. I any of this is still confusing, just ask and I'll do my best to help out. I will add our DPL too now that I'm back. :D
EDIT: I will be moving this to Going Solo now and you are on your way!

P S The MW does seem a little different to the ones I've used before. I can't get my readers username to go in and usually the uploaded filenames are displayed. I'm putting timings into the "notes" column - is that correct?
