Thanks, Diana,

It's no worry about the delay.

I'm in the middle of moving home; I'm writing this from a local library.

I should be back in business next week.

Diana,

I'm sorry it took so long; I had trouble finding my microphone cable.

Section 16 re-uploaded
section 16 @5:03 the end of the sentence sounds weird, as if the recording skipped when you say "but for the chill there"
That line was "but for the childer" ... if it weren't for the children ... and I tried to shift voices for it, but you're right that it didn't work well, so it's now in the narrator voice.

Section 22 uploaded. Total time recorded now: 13:59:17

From "Of the Sellers of Trees ..." on PDF 145/text 130 to end of page 151/136

Section 23 will be from "Of the Street Sale of Lavender" from PDF 152/ text 137

***

In the table on page 144/131 (starting at around 3.34), there's a footnote (marked with a "dagger") to six of the totals in the last quarter of the table. I've read this footnote separately to the six entries, at the end of the table.

Hi, Peter.
I'm not sure what "Spot PL" means (at section 16), so I'll PL section 17.

Can you give me an indication of where in the book that starts?
Thanks.

Hello, Gill,

Spot PL (proof-listen): first the reader uploads a new section, then the proof-listener checks it and posts details of any errors found, then the reader makes the changes and uploads the corrected sound file (and sets the flag in the magic window to say "ready for spot PL"), then the proof-listener just checks the spots in the recording which were affected by the edit to make sure they sound okay (and sets the flag to say "PL OK").

(EDITED; when I first posted, I slipped up and originally described section 15 instead of section 16 for the spot PL.)

Section 16 was uploaded in the post of March 24th,
starting with Of Orange and Lemon Selling in the streets. PDF pages 102-121 / text 87-96 ... ends just before "Of the stationary street-sellers"
Diana posted on May 28th:
@5:03 the end of the sentence sounds weird, as if the recording skipped when you say "but for the chill there".
I posted in the thread shortly after her note (my post on June the 18th).

***
EDIT: (from post of April the 19th) Section 17 starts at "Of the stationary street-sellers ....", runs through PDF pages 111,114-119 / text pages 96, 99-104

Section 18 starts with The Street Irish on 119 / 104

***
I've tried to give start and end points with each upload.

At the end of the book are some pages of errata, usually corrections to figures given in tables. I've made these changes in the recordings, and give details when I upload the relevant section.

Thanks for taking these on; feel no obligation to do them all ... or to continue with the new uploads. It's a very big project ... besides, you might not like my voice!

Gill, I'm sorry, but I mis-read your posts and didn't catch your request for the details of section 17. I've now added these to my last post.

EDIT:

I've extracted a few lines from my conversation with Diana, my previous proof-listener, as they might help you with your PLing:-

I'm just editing the first chapter now. I thought I'd mention that I'm going to try to be consistent in how I handle some common abbreviations:

viz - namely
etc - et cetera
&c - and so on

***

I've rather erratically rendered "halfpenny" as "half penny" and "hay penny" (or "hayp nee"). "Hay penny" (written sometimes as "ha'penny" in conversations in this book) is how we pronounced it up until decimalisation in 1971. Please do tell me if you feel that it would sound better if I were consistent. In fact, I still talk about pennies and tuppenny bits, rather than one P or two P.

***
When Mayhew has used brackets () , I've usually tried to handle the contents with a change of tone, but when the enclosure is long or if it might be confusing, I've enclosed it with the words "note" and "end note".

***
***

When you're up and running, I'll ask Annise, my MC (metacoordinator) to give you access to the magic window, so you can comment and change the flags when you've PL'd a section.

PL of Section 17
(Sorry in advance if I've been TOO thorough!)

Starts right on 0:00
0:06 "Part 1" instead of "Volume 1"
0:09 Reader does not read prescribed intro, but instead says "This LibriVox recording is in the public domain".
1:20 Missing "No. 3" before "from Blackwall to Brompton"
2:39 Missing "the" before "toy-stalls"
3:41 Missing "14 of the fish" after "(the poorest district of all)"
5:06 "vegetables" said instead of "vegetable"
6:47 Missing "street" before "fishmongers"
13:38 Missing "aye" before "I've seen the world"
14:26 "knew" said instead of "know"
14:53 "make" said instead of "makes"
15:04 "not" said instead of "nor"
15:07 and 15:10 Reader says "D blank D" for "d---d" (I thought the convention was to say "blank" for the whole word in such cases.)
15:44 Reader says "D blank n" for "d---n" (Comment as above.)
17:41-c17:42 slightly too long pause.
20:03 "foreign" should be emphasised in this quote
21:08 slight click or swallowing sound is heard before "That the costermongers..."
21:39 switched around "so doing" ["doing so" said]
32:12-13 slightly long pause.
34:12 audible break
37:42 "that he would" said instead of "he should"

Thanks, Gill.

I've taken your notes and added my comments in square brackets. I've adjusted the spot times since I made the corrections, but the difference is rarely more than a couple of seconds.

Peter

Section 17

Starts right on 0:00
[It started at about 0.4 sec, when I looked at the FLAC file with Audacity, but I've added 0.2 sec or so. The actual wording for this introductory gap is "No more than 0.5 to 1 second", but you're right that there seems to be a concensus for actual "0.5 to 1 second" instead.]
0:06 "Part 1" instead of "Volume 1"
[Corrected]
0:09 Reader does not read prescribed intro, but instead says "This LibriVox recording is in the public domain".
[This is an accepted alternative intro for solo projects; it's mentioned in the first post.]
1:21 Missing "No. 3" before "from Blackwall to Brompton"
[p96, col 1, end of 1st paragraph. Corrected]
2:41 Missing "the" before "toy-stalls"
[p96, col 1, 2nd para from bottom. Corrected]
3:42 Missing "14 of the fish" after "(the poorest district of all)"
[p96, col 2, line 2 in the "stationary fruit sellers" section. Corrected]
5:08 "vegetables" said instead of "vegetable"
[p96, col 2, end of 3rd paragraph. Corrected]
6:48 Missing "street" before "fishmongers"
[p99, col 1, para 1, line 10. Corrected.]
13:38 Missing "aye" before "I've seen the world"
[p100, col 1, para 2, line 11. Corrected.]
14:26 "knew" said instead of "know"
[p101, col 1, 29th line from bottom. Corrected]
14:55 "make" said instead of "makes"
[p101, col 1, 19th line from the bottom. Corrected]
15:07 "not" said instead of "nor"
[p101, col 1, 15th line from the bottom. Corrected]
15:07 and 15:10 Reader says "D blank D" for "d---d" (I thought the convention was to say "blank" for the whole word in such cases.)
[There's really no agreement on how to handle this, so I've left them as they stand. I could argue that the author put in the initial and final letters, so I'm reading them!]
15:44 Reader says "D blank n" for "d---n" (Comment as above.)
[See above.]
17:41-c17:42 slightly too long pause.
[p100, col 2, line 34. Corrected]
20:02 "foreign" should be emphasised in this quote
[p101, col 1, paragraph 1, line 16. I've corrected this, but, generally, please don't worry about emphasis unless it grossly changes the meaning.]
21:085 slight click or swallowing sound is heard before "That the costermongers..."
[p101, col 1, paragraph 1, last sentence. I couldn't hear it myself, but I've deleted a few tenths of a second at that location.]
21:38 switched around "so doing" ["doing so" said]
[p101, col 1, paragraph 2, line 2. Corrected]
32:10 slightly long pause.
[p102, col 2, line 22. Corrected]
34:10 audible break
[p103, col 1, paragraph 2. only a fraction over one second; I've left as it stands, as it separates two speakers]
37:39 "that he would" said instead of "he should"
[p103 col 2 line 17. Corrected]

Gill,
In a way, there are two degrees of "word-perfect" proof listening, which I don't think are made clear in the wikis.

Standard proof-listening doesn't involve comparison with the text; I think of it as a check on comprehensibility and flow: eliminate over-long pauses, stumbles, duplication etc. However, in standard PLing, whole sentences can be missed out, if their omission isn't obvious to the listener.

Word-perfect PLing does involve comparison with the original text. What I might call "absolute word-perfect" PLing catches every error, but a slightly less rigorous form of it would catch numerical errors, and missing words or words which have been changed to strongly disturb the meaning ... but could leave lesser errors untouched (such as ... as has been caught in my other solo ... "towards" being read instead of the textual "toward").

It'll take less work for you and I if we aim at that slightly looser "word-perfect" ... after all, I've estimated this whole project to be almost fifty hours long, and I'm only about a quarter of the way through; that's a lot of errors to spot. Are you happy with that?
