Sentimental Education by Gustave Flaubert (1821 - 1880).

Quote:
Sentimental Education (French: L'Éducation sentimentale, 1869) is a novel by Gustave Flaubert, that is considered one of the most influential novels of the 19th century. The story focuses on the romantic life of a young man at the time of the French Revolution of 1848. ( Wikipedia)

  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Say:
"Sentimental Education, by Gustave Flaubert. Chapter [number], [chapter name]."

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Chapter [number] of Sentimental Education by Gustave Flaubert. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes.
  • Example filename sentimentaleducation_##_flaubert_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. sentimentaleducation_01_flaubert_128kb.mp3)

Hi Ali,

I can MC for you. As a soloist, you are your own Book Coordinator (BC), so you will need to manage the Magic Window (MW). Here are some instructions: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kVj409nG_E0XJ5UrrcL7EVx7Qyx-2UQ7dbw4mINi3XQ

Back soon with a MW!

OK, I think you are all set. We will hang out in the Launch Pad for a little while to see if we can catch a DPL (dedicated proof-listener). I added a ~ in the topic heading, which means that you are looking for one.

I've filled in the first three chapter titles just to get you going, but you can take it from here. Beware of the double quotation marks in Chapter 5. Archive.org (where our files are hosted) does not like double quotes! Change these to single quotes whenever you see them in chapter titles.

I will probably not be online again until Thursday evening (Eastern time zone), but just post here if you have any problems or questions.

Have fun!

Thanks so much! I'll get started on this and let you know if I have any questions!

If you're looking for a DPL, I'd be happy to volunteer.

You know, I've done several books' worth of DPLing, but I still haven't done a solo recording...

You're in! You should have access to the MW now.

Moving us to Going Solo. :)

Hi team,
The first chapter is up and ready for PL!

@smijen - I took the liberty to put the link up on the magic window through the BC Admin site. Let me know if this is how I should proceed with the rest of the sections.

Thanks!
Ali

You're off to a good start!

Here are your notes:

2:01: Gap between 'from whom' and 'she had' is a little too long
5:58: (not required) The end of 'calculation' has been cut short
8:00: 'cloaks' should be 'coats'
8:27: 'were held' should be 'who held'
16:23: 'joyous' should be 'jealous'
16:31: Gap between 'felt that' and 'there were' is a little too long
20:41: Gap between 'the little' and 'red tassels' is a little too long
21:01: Gap between 'which all' and 'things converged' is a little too long
23:42: Gap between 'as if' and 'there were' is a little too long
23:51 (not required): 'on the practice' should be 'in the practice'

Oh, and as you're technically the BC for this project, yes, you should put the recordings into the MW yourself.

Thanks so much for your detailed comments, Jordan!

I've made the edits and updated the link accordingly.

Hoping to have chapter 2 up later today.

Thanks again!

Ali

Chapter 1 is now PL OK!

As for Chapter 2, there's only a couple of things:
4:09 (not required): 'recreation' is here being used to mean 'time off', so should be pronounced 'rek-ree-EY-shun', not 'ree-kree-EY-shun'
16:13: The ending silence is too short. It need to be 5 seconds, while you're at just less than 4.

Hi Ali - I'm so sorry for not getting back to you about the MW. Yes, as Jordan says, you put the links in. You're in charge of this project! :)

Unfortunately, you've gone too far in the other direction now...

You're at about 6.5 seconds now. Aim for between 4.5 and 5.5.
