Perhaps some clues as to how Mme de Staël travelled? Or, as to how her travels were made tolerable.

Hi Barbara,
Section 3 is PL OK.
I realize now what I need when I travel (and at home). I need a staff of servants.
My best,

I'll bet you know what "the privilege of the tabouret" was. Such strange customs and tabus arise in intensely hierarchical societies - as in the Pacific Islands when first visited by Cook, and in the courts of the Chinese Emperors...

The first section seems to take place where the Battles of the Somme were horribly waged. The names of villages in this area are on our War Memorials - familiar in our mouths as household words (or they were once). When I looked up Hénencourt, I discovered that Madame de Lameth's château was just behind the British lines - the I ANZAC Corps had its headquarters there. Later German shelling destroyed half of it.

Hi Barbara,
Section 7 is PL OK.
Yes, I am reading Holger Herwig's book on the Marne, 1914 right now and it was the new advanced artillery which made WWI so lethal (that and the machine guns, of course). The village names are haunting. But it's also cool about all those Rousseau manuscripts!

This was an interesting section, I thought.
I don't know what would have helped Marie Antoinette. Maybe not bringing her Austrian staff with her?

Some say M. Necker's speech, which bored our author "to death", lasted 2 hours, some say 3 hours. Wikipedia says of it:
Best, his address at the Estates-General was terribly miscalculated: it lasted for hours, and while those present expected a reforming policy to save the nation, he gave them financial data. This approach had serious repercussions on Necker's reputation; he appeared to consider the Estates-General to be a facility designed to help the administration rather than to reform government.

Hi Barbara,

Shades of Madame de Staël.
Revolutions are very sneaky, I guess, if one is an aristo!
