The phenomenology of mind by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770 - 1831). Translated by James Black Baillie (1872 - 1940)

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/the-phenomenology-of-mind-volume-1-by-georg-wilhelm-friedrich-hegel/

Phänomenologie des Geistes (1807) is Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel's most important and widely discussed philosophical work. Hegel's first book, it describes the three-stage dialectical life of Spirit. The title can be translated as either The Phenomenology of Spirit or The Phenomenology of Mind, because the German word Geist has both meanings.
Phenomenology was the basis of Hegel's later philosophy and marked a significant development in German idealism after Kant. Focusing on topics in metaphysics, epistemology, physics, ethics, history, religion, perception, consciousness, and political philosophy, The Phenomenology is where Hegel develops his concepts of dialectic (including the Master-slave dialectic), absolute idealism, ethical life, and Aufhebung. The book had a profound effect in Western philosophy, and "has been praised and blamed for the development of existentialism, communism, fascism, death of God theology, and historicist nihilism." IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I'll MC this, ONLY IF you separate volume 1 and volume 2 into two separate projects (starting volume 2 after volume 1 is done). It's a HUGE project, and even divided into its separate volumes, it's quite a large, difficult text. It's better to get the first volume done and cataloged, then move on to the next one - it gives you a sense of accomplishment rather than getting bogged down halfway in such an elephant of a project.

Do you agree? :)

We will need at least an estimated section count in order to set up the magic window. Sections can be added or removed later, but we need a ball park estimate to start.

Hi - many thanks, and yes will separate the two.

I would calculate about 26 sections; most of the chapters segment neatly in terms of time into sections, and it will include a section zero for the translators preface.

I detect an appropriate degree of scepticism given I've little/no track record and it is a big and complex book, but have stamina and have been looking for a project like this.

OK, you're set up. :)

As you're the soloist, you're in charge of updating the Magic Window.

Detailed Instructions for accessing the Magic Window can be found in the document linked below:
Instructions for Soloists

Video showing how to use the Magic Window (read the above document first - it has the information on how to log in for the first time, which this does not have):
Magic Windows / Section Compiler: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOP4tcr1kl8

When you upload a chapter, put the file duration (mm:ss) in the Notes field and the uploaded URL into the Listen URL field, and mark it from Assigned to Ready for PL.

Maurice and Tricia, Do you need a DPL for this project? If so, can I do it?

Mark, are you able to get into the Magic Window? I'm waiting to confirm that before I move this out of the Launch Pad. :)

Hi - have now accessed MW.

In my 50s, so digital immigrant rather than native. Hope to post first 4-5 sections by end next week.

hi - prefaces and introduction uploaded; hope I've got the different bits in the right place in the magic window boxes.

The only notes are that i wanted to get the translators preface in as a single file to be in the 00 section, so I've missed off the several names as acknowledgement at the end as it was pretty long already, (and I sort of figured that none of them are around any more anyway).

The other thing is that the introduction (section 5) is a bit quiet, but have compressed it and I hope the levels are OK now

MW looks good. You don't have to put in the page numbers and from/to text info if you don't want to. Since you are doing standard PL, the PL won't necessarily be following along with the text and thus doesn't need it.

And change the last column from "assigned" to "ready to PL" - then you'll be set. :)

Hmmm. The names of acknowledgement are part of the translator's preface, so removing them is editing the text, which we don't do. So I'm afraid you'll need to record them into the first section. There's plenty of room; files need to be under 72 minutes so they fit on an audio CD. So you have a good half hour's worth of wiggle room.

Maurice, Oh, sorry, I see there is some PLing to be done here. I like to get it done right away but, will get it done in the next 2 days. I am assuming that you are ready for PL. If so, it is helpful if you set the last column in the MW to say "ready for PL". I am also checking the "notify me" below, then when you post to say you have added a section I will get the message.

Section 1 PL notes - one repeat at 5:29 "Instead of laying hold of the matter itself....altogether. Instead of laying hold of the matter...."
All else sounds good. FYI There is some little background noise, sounds like machinery, but it is not very long or loud, and to me it is acceptable.

I will wait to PL section 0 until you have added the material at the end.
