The Odyssey for Boys and Girls by Alfred John church (189 - 1912).

This project is now complete and can be found in our catalog here: https://librivox.org/the-odyssey-for-boys-and-girls-by-alfred-john-church/

A retelling of the adventures of Ulysses, including his adventures both the Cyclops and Circe, as he journeys home to his home of Ithaca. The story then continues to include his quest to rejoin his wife and family of whom he has been separated from for twenty years. This is Homer's Odyssey for the younger set. ( Ginny Blankenship)
  1. Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.mainlesson.com/display.php?author=church&book=odyssey&story=_contents
  2. Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

  3. The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
    START of recording (Intro):
    • "Chapter [number] of The Odyssey for Boys and Girls. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Say:
"The Odyssey for Boys and Girls, by Alfred John church. [Chapter number, title]"

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Chapter [number] of The Odyssey for Boys and Girls by Alfred John church. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Only if applicable, say:
      "[Chapter title]"
    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of [Chapter]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of The Odyssey for Boys and Girls, by Alfred John church. "

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes.
  4. Example filename odyssey_##_church_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. odyssey_01_church_128kb.mp3)
  5. Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.

OK, your Magic Window is ready.

For a solo project, you are the Book Coordinator. That means you fill out the Magic Window. I've given you an idea how to fill in the section titles. You'll need to go in and finish them off.

Which means you'll need to get into the MW. Instructions are in the BC How-to; and this is a more detailed version of the First Login instructions (with pictures!)

Once you upload a section, please put the link in the MW and change the status to "ready for PL". Please be sure to also enter the time (mm:ss) in the "notes" column. Then post in the thread that a new section is ready for PL. If a PLer doesn't come along by the time you get a couple of sections done, we can advertise.

If you have questions, or if you have any trouble with the instructions in the BC how to, please post and we'll work through it together. There is a bit of a learning curve when you do your first solo. You've picked a nice size book - not too long and focused on Children (which are often easier to read), so it should be a manageable and enjoyable process for you.

Proof-listening

1:42-the word "little" needs to be spoken clearer: "And took his little son and laid him in front..."
2:36-decrease volume
3:24-pause is a little too long
5:02-the word "sweet" needs to be clearer: "And it was wondrously sweet."
8:08-the word "rock" sounded like "wock": For who should be able to roll away the great rock that..."

Becky,

Thank you for listening to this section. We appreciate your comments. These all strike me as notes which are at the discretion of the soloist.

Section 3-5 ready for PL :)

I adjusted the settings on my microphone for this one....let me know if you think I should re-record sections 1 and 2 since I think the new settings are a bit less harsh than the first 2....

Thanks!
