The Conqueror Worm by Edgar Allan Poe (1809 - 1849).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-conqueror-worm-by-edgar-allan-poe/
Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer, editor, and literary critic. Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre. He is widely regarded as a central figure of Romanticism in the United States and American literature as a whole, and he was one of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story. Poe is generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre and is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. ( Wikipedia)

The Conqueror Worm by Edgar Allan Poe, read for LibriVox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, your location, and/or your personal url.]
Then read the poem:

LO! ’tis a gala night
Within the lonesome latter years!
An angel throng, bewinged, bedight
In veils, and drowned in tears,
Sit in a theatre, to see
A play of hopes and fears,
While the orchestra breathes fitfully
The music of the spheres.

Mimes, in the form of God on high,
Mutter and mumble low,
And hither and thither fly—
Mere puppets they, who come and go
At bidding of vast formless things
That shift the scenery to and fro,
Flapping from out their Condor wings
Invisible Woe!

That motley drama—oh, be sure
It shall not be forgot!
With its Phantom chased for evermore,
By a crowd that seize it not,
Through a circle that ever returneth in
To the self-same spot,
And much of Madness, and more of Sin,
And Horror the soul of the plot.

But see, amid the mimic rout
A crawling shape intrude!
A blood-red thing that writhes from out
The scenic solitude!
It writhes!—it writhes!—with mortal pangs
The mimes become its food,
And seraphs sob at vermin fangs
In human gore imbued.

Out—out are the lights—out all!
And, over each quivering form,
The curtain, a funeral pall,
Comes down with the rush of a storm,
While the angels, all pallid and wan,
Uprising, unveiling, affirm
That the play is the tragedy, ‘Man,’
And its hero the Conqueror Worm.

At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:

Hey David,

I listened to your recording ... sounds good, although I noted, starting at time 1:02, the text reads:

Through a circle that ever returneth in
To the self-same spot,

...and I heard you read: To the same-self spot,

Up to you whether you think it makes enough of a difference to fix!

Thank you Burt, good first reading.
The volume is a bit high at 93.7 dB You can check your own volume you using our Checker program - see info at http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Checker Make sure you download the experimental version - you will find the volume in decibels on the Information tab. For your information, we look for around 89 dB (87-91 is OK)
You have 10 seconds of ending silence, only 5 is required for a short reading.

*Please let me know under what name would you like to appear in the LV catalog and if you have one, we can put your personal URL link on your catalog page too.

good choice. Here is my gothic rendering of it. I start off easy, but it becomes every more scary as it progresses, a bit like the conqueror worm himself, I guess :?

happy nightmares, all :)

I humbly wanted to test myself in English.
Let me know if there are things to correct regarding accent or anything. I'm open to constructive criticism.
