Thank you ladies! 8-)

For this one I would prefer recordings of history that is really, really far back - middle ages, Greeks, Egyptians, Neanderthals... you get the idea ;-) It will probably not be easy to find enough of that, but we can try.

And Julia: We had a conversation about that particular reader, didn't we? My opinion hasn't changed... :P

Thank you jo!

I think we already featured "Prehistoric Men", but those "Tree Dwellers" sound equally good! :D

for non-english you could feature mommsen https://librivox.org/author/4423
he is to my knowledge the only historian to be awarded the nobel price for literature. a shame that we dont have a translation of that magnum opus (yet) :)

also ford's beacon lights may be interesting as jo already has in her post above

I looked at Ford and found it funny he'd stop at the Rennaissance. Of course he didn't - 8 volumes to go...

If you include group projects, how about The Young Carthaginian, set in the Punic Wars? https://librivox.org/the-young-carthaginian-by-g-a-henty/

Or several others by Henty, such as Beric the Briton: The Story of the Roman Invasion https://librivox.org/beric-the-briton-a-story-of-the-roman-invasion-by-g-a-henty/
or Wulf the Saxon https://librivox.org/wulf-the-saxon-by-g-a-henty/

Henty is always a good option for these things, isn't he...

OF course I include group projects, thank you Lynne! :D

The only thing I cannot use are individual poems from one of our numerous collections. Nothing about our collections, but individual files are hard to link to, and usually there are plenty of other options around.

If you accept fiction, how about Thorstein of the Mere? https://librivox.org/thorstein-of-the-mere-a-saga-of-the-northmen-in-lakeland-by-william-gershom-collingwood/
A fine adventure set in 10th-century England at a time when everyday life in north was made hazardous by wars and shifting alliances among Saxon, British and Norse rulers.

The staff has picked for June - thanks for your suggestions. Please have a look at this page for the current list. You can also check out our wiki page for a plain vanilla list that contains all the staff picks for this year.

:hmm: I have no idea how this moved in the war direction. I didn't plan it to be, but...

The theme for next month will be

Easy Summer Listening

I am happy about all suggestions concerning things you'd like to read over summer, stuff that doesn't require much thinking (or much muscle power to hold the hardcover ) Something light and fluffy this time please. :D

Especially welcome are suggestions of plays and poetry.

Thanks for your help!

Summer often means a trip or vacation... in Susan Coolidge's A Little Country Girl, Candace goes on her first trip to the coast to visit her fashionable cousins. https://librivox.org/a-little-country-girl-by-susan-coolidge/

Or for those more in the mood for a camping trip in the wilderness, Gertrude Atherton's The Valiant Runaways follows two teenage boys trying to evade conscription into the army as they hide out in the California wilderness. Savage bears, a river rescue, capture by Indians, escape on wild mustangs and a revolutionary battle await. viewtopic.php?f=16&t=45172

A few ideas:

Aunt Jane's Nieces Out West by L. Frank Baum, a story primarily for adolescent girls (?) about 3 cousins and their indulgent and adoring bachelor uncle. They have an early road trip and encounter some very unsavory types but also some new friends and they get caught up in the budding Hollywood industry, but their sweet natures bring them through unscathed (yes, it is a bit syrupy!) https://librivox.org/aunt-janes-nieces-out-west-by-l-frank-baum/

Bill Biddon, Trapper by Edward S. Ellis is a classic about the life our young hero, initially lured by the California Gold Rush, but persuaded to change his course and head north to pursue the life of a trapper. Wild animals and 'injuns' keep it interesting. https://librivox.org/bill-biddon-trapper-by-edward-s-ellis/

The Covered Wagon by Emerson Hough is a more traditional tale of a wagon train crossing the country and the joys and perils associated with it. A love triangle. Indian fights, buffalo hunts, dangerous river crossings and other dangers of the trail add to a gripping and entertaining yarn. https://librivox.org/the-covered-wagon-by-emerson-hough/

The Life and Adventures of Kit Carson by DeWitt C. Peters is the authorized biography of the famed guide, mountain man and trapper, much of it in his own words. https://librivox.org/the-life-and-adventures-of-kit-carson-by-dewitt-c-peters/

The Expedition of the Donner Party and its Tragic Fate by Eliza P. Donner Houghton is the story of the ill-fated Donner party, which, stranded in the Sierra Nevadas, famously resorted to cannibalism. The author was one of the few survivors, aged about 4 at the time. Incidentally, it was listening to this book that persuaded me to volunteer with Librivox 8-) https://librivox.org/expedition-of-the-donner-party-and-its-tragic-fate-by-eliza-p-donner-houghton/
